Cold weather headed to Augusta

  • Follow Metro

Augusta will get its first cold snap of the season beginning tonight.

A cold front will sweep through late today and through Wednesday. Wednesday’s highs will barely be in the 50s. Temperatures will continue to fall through the evening.

“Wednesday night will be the coldest night this season,” said Bruce Cherry, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in West Columbia, S.C., about the lows expected to drop into the 20s.

Several days ago, Cherry said, meteorologists were predicting snow flurries for this week’s cold snap, but that has changed to a possibility of sprinkles tonight as the front pushes through. Until this week, Augusta has been reaching “normal” highs in the low 70s and lows in the low 40s.

“This is a little early (in the season), but it’s not unusual,” Cherry said of the cold temperatures. “But it will be short-lived – about 24 to 36 hours.”

Thursday will see temperatures in the 50s before they gradually warm each day to the mid-60s by the weekend.

Next week is likely to see “near normal” temperatures, but the end of the week is still questionable.

The weather forecast for Thanksgiving is still undetermined at this point.

COLD WEATHER TIPS
  • Bring potted plants indoors.
  • Cover cold-sensitive outdoor plants with a cloth or put down extra mulch.
  • Provide adequate housing and bedding for outdoor pets. Bring pets indoors.
  • Observe heater safety. Keep heat sources away from furniture, drapes and children.
  • Let indoor faucets drip if temperatures drop below freezing.
  • Wrap exposed pipes and faucets with a foam pipe covering, towel or duct tape.
  • Don’t use wiper blades to clear windshields of frost. It damages the blades.
  • Don’t warm your car in a closed in area to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.

If you've been using plain

If you've been using plain water in your vehicle's radiator, change the water out for the proper mix of water and antifreeze. Just observe safety protocols for dealing with your vehicle's cooling system.

Contrary to popular belief, a large percentage are not typical street Bums.

Good PSA

Not surprised how many people still think of Global Warming,
and forget we still have winters every year.
