Rants & Raves

AS A HOMEBOUND retiree, I got to observe Richmond County inmate crews on the job for five to 10 days. They arrived at 8:45 a.m. and set up their chairs and then their tools. A five- to six-man crew goes to work as others maintain their position in their chairs. After 15 minutes, all of them are in chairs and eating. About 11 a.m. they load up and leave and return in an hour in time to load up and leave for the day. They are always gone by 1 p.m. Hire contractors; it’s cheaper.

WHAT A BUNCH of twerps in Georgia who get all exercised over 10 words written by a foreigner 157 years ago in a different world, just because of a single complaint by a busybody.

TEN THOUSAND! Now that’s a lot of people who showed up to support the University Health Care Foundation’s annual Miracle Mile Breast Cancer Walk. The great news is that the event raised more than $400,000 that will be used to fund mammograms for the uninsured. Kudos to all who walked and to those who donated.

I THINK IT IS outrageous that The Chronicle does not publish any columns on a regular basis written by liberals. From time to time, The Chronicle does publish a nonpolitical column by Eugene Robinson. Why not publish all his columns?

I NOTICE THAT in order to register for a turkey given by the James Brown Family Foundation, the applicant is required to provide a state-issued photo ID. Why is this acceptable for getting your turkey but requiring a photo ID before voting in an election is discriminatory and racist?

ANOTHER SPILLED hot drink lawsuit. To those eating establishments with drive-through windows. These businesses should cease selling these liquids from the drive-through window. Walk-in service only.

I HOPE THAT Jenkins White Elementary Charter Schools’ fine arts infusion in its curriculum this year as a strategy to boost achievement and enhance social learning will be successful. Unfortunately, I have seen this approach applied in another school (in another state) with disastrous results. This school spent most of the students’ time in creative arts with no learning of the basics.

THE PAPER HAS taken up the cause of handicapped parking. I wish they would take up handicapped bathrooms. The doors are so heavy that I can’t get them opened unless someone comes to help me – and that is going in and out.

"Harley, interesting the comments of mine...

...you choose to reply to."

Indeed.

Ever since you insisted, after hours of discussion and even a video clip) that Augusta (or the CBD thereof) was like Detroit, I've become even more careful about commenting.

Some, I just can't help myself.

Throw Darts If You Choose....

....but I CAN read a map.

The existence of North Richmond County isn't in question. It really doesn't take a "map expert" to discern that fact.

Why someone would repeatedly deny it exists only makes one wonder about the reason(s) therefore.

North Richmond County...

....is 180 degrees opposite of South Richmond County. You (and others) have claimed North Richmond County "doesn't exist."

Clearly it does.

The Army has many different types of maps. All of them that I've seen have a North, a South, an East, and a West.

No we have claimed that

nobody has ever called any part of Augusta that....it's a moniker that he made up...of course there is a North South East West everywhere but for someone that is not even from here to just start naming stuff as he wants to call it is kinda weird.

North Richmond County...

....is defined by a map, not by Countyman, not by me, not by you. It is what it is. It is not a function of where somebody happens to be standing. It is a function of map location and orientation.

A road that "runs East to West" can definitely be located in North Richmond County, just as easily as can be a road that runs North to South.

That's true of both Army maps and civilian maps. It's not a matter of opinion, it's a matter of fact.

This Is The Best Map Of Richmond County....

....I can find to illustrate where is North Richmond County. Actually, the Northern-most part of Richmond County is along the river in the very North-East corner of the County, actually North of Martinez. Martinez itself is not in Richmond County, but there are obviously parts of Richmond County that are North of Martinez.

Quarry Road dead ends near this corner and the map doesn't show any physical features beyond that dead-end.

Map reading

I taught map reading in the Army as well, but beyond that I learned that names often do not correlate with actual directions. If someone wants to be a pedant and argue technicalities, far be it from me to stop them. I've been part of Richmond County for over 15 years now and never heard anyone refer to what countyman referred to by that name. I also stopped worrying so much about compass direction when considering civilian maps after going through the Dallas area and seeing a North East West Northwest Central Northern Northwest Highway (I swear it was some beyond-bizarre combination like that, I don't recall exactly what though... who could if they didn't live there?) while traveling south in Texas heading back to Georgia.

Point is, don't trust geographic names, especially made-up ones by someone with an agenda who claims to only relate facts while constantly giving his opinions on things. I can call my house "The Southern White House" but that doesn't obligate anyone else to adopt that reference.

Oh,

And if we're treating "argument from authority" as valid instead of a fallacy, then I taught map reading as a college course for ROTC. Others may have better credentials, but credentials don't make anyone right. First, look at any random map of decent size (say Richmond County or better) and you'll find plenty of examples of directionally-challenged names. You'll see I'm right. Second, search for any reference of North Richmond County as the area defined by countyman that isn't from him or someone responding to him. I don't think you'll find many (if any).

SB3...

I taught Map Reading as a college course as well. I know maps. I also know something called "North Augusta" isn't necessarily North of Augusta. Never said it was.

Also, I have never said that "North Richmond County" is a name often used by the local public. That's actually NOT a prerequisite for there being a North Richmond County on a map.

Finally, I have agreed one man's view of "North Richmond County" is simply a matter of HIS interpretation. Mine, yours, Countyman's, or whatever. Unless the area in question is specifically defined by boundaries in some legal document my "North Richmond County" may not be the same as your "North Richmond County."

Several on here have declared that North Richmond County "doesn't exist." That is clearly an incorrect statement.

For Someone....

...who likes to claim I'm defending someone the lack of evidence remains.

Unlike some others, I'm arguing an issue...not an agenda.

Usually it doesn't take so long to get people to admit the obvious.

I admit that he is obviously wrong

you argue his issues all the time...and his agenda...believe what you will. Outsiders don't get to come in here and rename stuff for their agenda...Unless they run a University.

You Are Obviously Wrong...

North Richmond County exists.

As for Countyman, he may (or may not) be wrong about some particular issue. On the existence of "North Richmond County" he's right, whether you (or anybody else) is willing to admit the obvious.

I don't argue his issues. He hasn't asked me, nor does he need me to support his views. I do appreciate the development news he brings to the conversation.

Never said it didn't exist

only that the moniker is not used by anyone to describe any part of Augusta other than him and you now. Funny for someone that doesn't argue his issues you have spent 2 days on his NRC stuff..

You Definitely Have Said...

...it doesn't exist. So have others.

As for the time I spent, that's my business, isn't it? I spend time as I see fit and as my schedule allows.

I don't keep track of your time and wonder why my time is so important to you.

And again...I don't "argue his stuff," whether you think I do, or I should, or I shouldn't, really is irrelevant.
