WHAT IS THE process for breaking up the consolidated government of Augusta-Richmond County? I love where I live but am tired of paying for everything downtown when I live on the south side. This new rain tax is ridiculous. I bet they still won’t take care of the water that comes off the road onto my property.

RANT FOR THE American people. I wonder how many people reading this would sign a document concerning your income, your taxes, your health care, your well-being, your future, your investments and your retirement without even reading it? I doubt very many. But that’s what your Democratic leaders did with the Affordable Care Act. It will affect us for years.

RAY DREW COMPARES football to fishing, and Mark Richt’s son is studying music in Nashville. Is there nothing better to write about in the world of sports? Please stop bombarding us with silly stuff about the mighty University of Georgia Bulldogs.

OCT. 16, 2013, MARKED one year since Tim Grooms was brutally killed in his aunt’s room at University Hospital. The suspect was initially denied bond. In an emergency bond hearing before Thanksgiving last year because the suspect was gravely ill, the suspect was released from jail on bond. It has been a year since he was released. Evidently he is no longer gravely ill because he applied to the court to be appointed as the executor of his late wife’s estate. It is time to revoke his bond and return him to jail to await trial. Where is the justice for Tim Grooms?

I AGREE WITH the rant about the bad drivers in Augusta. I’ve never seen so many people blatantly run red lights and stop signs – turning right before coming to a complete stop at a red light or stop sign is illegal, people!

BILL KIRBY, I LOVE how you are still pinching pennies. The other week, some girl plopped three pennies down on the floor of the bathroom. Mama instantly pulled the girl away from getting the pennies, that they were dirty by who knows how many germs by people. After they walked out of the bathroom, I could indeed see drops of possible urine around the three pennies. But I picked them up and headed to the sink, turned on the water and rallied the soap and washed them a couple of times with good scrubbing and better rinsing of warm water. Now I have 3 more cents to add to the “fortune” I accrue in a special piggy bank.

Consolidation

No way you could break it up again. The inner City would be broke in no time.
Unless you like annexation..

Facts

Rant 1.... The residents living in West Augusta, CBD, Olde Town, North Richmond, Summerville, Harrisburg, Forest Hills, Southwest Augusta, South Augusta, etc all have to pay the rain tax....

The taxpayer funded projects like Diamond Lakes, the new bus depot, new tag office/utility building on Peach Orchard, magnet high school next to Augusta Tech, RCSO precinct on Hwy 56, Marshall's office on Deans Bridge, Morgan Rd widening, Butler Creek Greenway, Marvin Griffin rd improvements, Doug Barnard landscaping, etc are located in South Augusta..

The people who continue to bring up the taxpayer funded projects downtown always seem forget to very two important things. The TEE Center was approved by the local voters compared to the millions spent in South Augusta, and the convention center represents basic necessities(name one metro the size of Augusta without any convention space).

Inner City

Fishman.... What's your definition of the inner city?

The CBD, Waters Edge, Olde Town, and Summerville can all be considered apart of the urban core and they all have more disposable income per capita compared to South Augusta..

The Medical District is also beginning to attract residential developments(midrise building at 1399 Walton Way coming soon)..

So

Countyman, is it your assertion that the Consolidated Government is no longer needed in the capacity that it was formed? I.E. the City can function on taxes without the whole county?
If that's the case, I'm sure that the old County would love to go back to what it was before...

The demographics of certain

The demographics of certain areas in the county are much different in 2013 compared to 1996. The inner city wouldn't go broke if South Augusta decided to break apart... The Cabela's, new movie theater, Whole Foods, Texas Roadhouse, etc are coming to West Augusta and North Richmond due to surrounding demographics(each city depends on revenue generated from property taxes)..

Let's just continue to work together and improve the entire county..

No problem with that County, just wanted to make sure we remember why we consolidated in the first place.

West Augusta

If I remember, it was more of West Augusta's tax dollars that were needed.

The process for DE-CONSOLIDATION is simple.

Contact the Board of Elections.
Request the proper forms and procedure for a Voter petition to have a voter referendum placed on the next county election.

We have been looking into it, JUST for District 8, to simplify the process and increase the likelihood of success.

It has already been done previously so it is NOT new, it is legal and process has been approved by the state house.

Example: Sandy Spring got tried of Metro Atlanta sucking up its Tax money to cover the Downtown slum and constant Rebuild Atlanta Dreams. It De-consolidated and became its own Township.

North Fulton County was in the process of cutting ties with South Fulton over increased taxes rates in the North and lower tax rates in the South. But they were ready to vote to separate and the local polls showed 73% +/- 3% voting YES. A judge ruled in North Fulton's favor and Atlanta had to start taxing them the same as downtown slum ville.

In the case of District 8 maybe reverting to the old County Government might be the way to go, IF Hephzibah or Blythe don't want the mess ARC already has caused on the South Side.

Drawing a Line Tobacco Rd from Gate 5 to the Hwy 56 Loop is one idea that has been seriously considered.

A few even kicked around the idea of joining Burke County for lower taxes and less back biting political stunts.

Either way the process is simple, but it will take a few dozen serious people collecting valid signatures going door to door and at supermarkets.

Response to a serious question yesterday went unanswered .

Knowing we have some serious Liberal Bloggers that love to mix it up with the conservative bloggers here.

I posted the very 1st Rant & Rave asking:
So it could not be missed.

...."Seriously I want to hear from Obama supporters
and if and why you still support the Obamacare trying to be implemented now?"

http://chronicle.augusta.com/news/metro/2013-10-29/rants-raves#comment-1...

I was expecting a few dyed in the wool, kool-Aide drinking Liberals to recite the typical pre-programed stuff.

BUT, The Lack of response was surprising.
No One directly stated they supported ACA / Obamacare.

The closes single comment was by Corgimom which has shown she isn't a Liberal Kool-Aide Drinker, but a liberal person that has fallen on both political sides of the tracks frequently. I in part must agree with her statement that Medical costs have gotten way out of hand and it presents a serious hardship for the poor. The current situation promotes family Bankruptcies in too many cases just to save daddy or mommy or a child from death or hideous disfigurement.

http://chronicle.augusta.com/news/metro/2013-10-29/rants-raves#comment-1...

But, It seems this part of American is NOT all that hot for Obamacare. Because too many understand that while Obama Care was sold to us to help the 15 million uninsured, Obamacare has instead screwed over 300 Million others. and exempted 20+ million more more that the 15 million it was to help. No even counting, those special "Political supporters and Congress" that got Exemptions. AARP will make Billions off their special deal alone. No wonder they support the DNC.

May I offer some insightful reading?

Nocnoc, That Appears Too Easy

Nocnoc, it appears from what you say to be very easy to break away from the ARC consolidated government. So if a district gets a referendum and votes to break away that's all it takes? Man, that sounds too easy. I believe all the districts not in the old city would vote to leave.

AARP

I'm over 50 and since AARP supported Obamacare I've refused to join. I normally put their solicitations into their prepaid envelope and send it back with it all crossed out. I've joined AMAC. They have the real values and interests of people over 50.

The demographics of certain

The demographics of certain areas in the county are much different in 2013 compared to 1996. Why do you think that is? Because people with the means got the heck out of there because they got tired of the city dumping section 8 and screwing them out of their tax dollars. Perhaps you forget that the city lied during the consolidation fiasco. The vote should have been null and void when the county found out about the city being bankrupt. Quit saying the taxpayers approved the TEE center as it is...that is not a fact. A convention center is not a necessity. What a load of bunk....

South Augusta Secession

I drove out to the Starbucks factory being built Tuesday for something and was impressed by all the industry and thriving businesses out that way. There's enough money out there to support a great South Augusta City. I really wish enough people could get together to pull it off. We need to keep pushing that move. I wonder how many names are needed to have a referendum as Nocnoc says?

Drivers beware!

To all the idiots that think they can turn left in front of traffic making rights turns, beware of the law. You can never turn left across on coming traffic if the light is green. The only time you can turn left is with an arrow indicating
your right to turn left in front of stopped traffic. Please take time to read the sign hang next to the turning lane light ad if you can, follow the directions. If you hit a vehicle that is turning right when they have a green light, you will be at fault. Check with your local authorities if you have any questions, but when I have a green light, whether going straight or turning right, I have the right of way over vehicles turning left.

Burke County

Burke County says they will welcome annexing everything below Tobacco Road. Lower Taxes, Lower Insurance and better service!! Not to mention the industrial base they could pick up!!! Countyman touts his horn on the CBD but he really should think about the amount of taxes that come from south of Tobacco Rd. If all the industry started paying taxes elsewhere ARC would become the next Detroit!!

Dist 8 Deconsolidation process.

Assuming it follows other voter petition referendums,

There must be application or a number equal to at least
10% of the number of electors (not sure if it is registered or actual voted) who were eligible to vote.

Using Dist 8 voter numbers that is well under 1500 voter petition signatures. I'll get back with y'all with a factual number later....

"The inner city wouldn't go

"The inner city wouldn't go broke if South Augusta decided to break apart"

Fine, then turn us loose. We have gone broke "redeveloping" downtown. And yes, there probably is more disposable income in those areas now since downtown has been dumping their Section 8 into South Augusta and driving out everyone who could afford to relocate to LIVEABLE areas in other counties.

countyman persists with his laundry list of tax money spent in South Augusta and none of them are quality of life projects and none of them are things that would bring back retail shopping, restaurants, or residential development. Basically his list boils down to a park and a trail, both of which are zeroes for the vast majority of the Southeast Richmond County population. Marvin Griffin is industrial. One road widening is nice but is pretty normal stuff that should have been done years ago. As long as the "city" continues their "trail of tears" style forced relocation of the "old city" tribes to South Augusta, nothing will improve the quality of life in South Augusta. It is their dumping ground for their undesirables and they are using our tax money to level one slum and create another. They are not improving anything....they are just moving the garbage dump to a different area.

In the long run the biggest problem is NOT the lack of spending in South Augusta.....and there IS A LACK OF SPENDING on MAINTENANCE and SERVICES. But the main problems are the POLICIES of the "city" of Augusta toward South Augusta and using it as a neglected dumping ground for the low income problem residents that they are relocating out this way so they can blow tax money redeveloping THEIR city. THEIR city, THEIR drain pipes, THEIR convention center (well Paul and Billy's convention center), THEIR parking deck (well Paul and Billy's parking deck).....while we get a bus depot, a sheriffs station, and the privilege of keeping our ditches while paying for THEIR pipes.

And to get our park and trail all we have to do is suffer lower levels of service, outrageous garbage bills, a coming rain tax, an influx of county relocated low income crime prone "neighbors", and an illegal dual standard tax and fee system.

Why would we possibly want to separate from Richmond County????????? There have been WARS fought over fewer issues of taxation, mistreatment, neglect, and intentional rape and pillage of an area that has no political power.
