Mother of murder suspect killed in wreck

The mother of a 14-year-old girl charged with murder Monday in the fatal stabbing of a Burke County relative died in a car wreck Tuesday on her way from Florida to visit family in Keysville, Ga.

Natina Diana Wright, 31, of Titusville, Fla., died on impact around 5:05 p.m. Tuesday, when the 2013 Dodge Caravan she was travelling in ran off Interstate 16 West in Bulloch County and hit a culvert on the northbound shoulder of state Highway 67, said Franka Young, spokesman for the Georgia State Patrol.

According to preliminary reports, Wright, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was thrown forward into the windshield during the crash, which occurred on the off-ramp of Exit 127, approximately 70 miles from Keysville.

Wright’s daughter, whose name is being withheld by authorities, was arrested in Keysville on Monday and charged with murder and possession of a knife during the commission of a crime for fatally stabbing her aunt, Shirley Elaine Bush Mack, 49. Mack’s relationship relationship to Wright is unclear.

Burke County sheriff’s deputies were called to a home about 8:30 p.m. Monday in the 1100 block of Scott Store Road, where they found Mack on the floor with stab wounds to her chest.

Sgt. Dedric Smith said he believes Mack was arguing with her niece before the child stabbed her about three times. The girl is in custody at a youth detention Center in Sandersville, Ga.,

The sheriff’s office has collected evidence but is awaiting test results to determine what was used to kill the victim.

Police said four other children who were at the residence were handed over to the Department of Family and Children Services.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Web site, Mack was a registered sex offender and was convicted of lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 16 on June 20, 1990, in Florida.

Though the wreck report was not finalized Wednesday, charges are pending at the completion of the Georgia State Patrol’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team’s investigation, Young said.

The driver of the vehicle; Kenneth P. Varner, 52, of Coco Beach, Fla.; and a second passenger; Joy Lanita Wright, 27, also of Titusville, Fla.; survived the crash.

Varner was transported to East Georgia Hospital, while Joy Wright was airlifted to Memorial Medical Center in Savannah, Ga.
