Rants & Raves

  • Follow Metro

THIS IS A RANT to all the bad drivers of Augusta. I would list everything you are doing wrong, but the fact that you think merge means speed up and run people off the road and you don’t understand what a speed limit is leads me to believe you probably don’t read the newspaper anyway.

IN THIS POLITICALLY correct world of ours, people are not taking identity theft as seriously as they should. The government should aggressively pursue those people and prosecute them as if they had robbed thousands of banks. Lock them up for life.

HERE’S A POINT OF civility that should be exhibited more often: How about young people leaving front seats on the buses for the elderly and folks with disabilities? That is, go ahead and sit farther back, or at least get up and leave the foremost front seats upon arrival of an elderly person.

ONE WAY THE Color Run was not fun for folks were the owners and workers at restaurants where such dirty people insisted on sitting on the chairs or messing up the bathrooms. A woman at least somehow got colors smeared all over the toilet seat, the area below the toilet seat and all over the rim of the sink.

RANT CONCERNING THE decision of county officials to exclude the county pickup of tires. Most streets in my neighborhood have tires that have been on the curb since the new collection has started. Is there a plan or place that property owners can take tires for recycling?

THE SALVATION ARMY is now accepting applications for Christmas assistance; that is, Christmas gifts for children. Included in the documents that applicants have to supply is a photo ID. I wonder whether there will there be a big fuss made of the requirement of a photo ID in this situation? If a photo ID is required for handouts, why isn’t it a requirement to vote?

THE DEREK DOOLEY family is not as happy about their absence from University of Tennessee as the Volunteer faithful. We knew it was a mistake when he was hired – no winning record. All I can say about Derek Dooley is good riddance and the same goes for Lane Kiffin. I hope it’s a lesson well-learned.

FUTURE SECTION 8 housing being built under the disguise of luxury apartments is why Bass Pro Shops changed their minds. I am not a Ron Cross fan and have voted against him every time he has run for office. But he is dead right on the Bass Pro Shop deal. I agree with his actions and comments.

Carmax area

Last rant/rave..... Their really apartment homes and the 1br begins at $800 and up. The community has been under construction for several months and they were announced back in 2012.. The Bass Pro announcement was just made a few months ago, and they would have never chosen the location from the beginning if your comment was factual.

Bass Pro will only locate in certain areas based on population, income, traffic, etc... Bass Pro is know for trying to get smaller cities to give them tons of incentives, and they wanted additional money from Columbia County.

The Carmax area will eventually attract something, because it's the most attractive site for new retailers to open in Columbia County. I'll give the Carmax area the slight advantage over the Furys Ferry/Riverwatch pkwy area. When I say 'new retailers' I referencing the businesses not presently located in the metro area.

It's kinda ironic the best sites for commercial growth in Columbia County are both spilt between Richmond/Columbia.

you think merge means speed up and run people off the road

Why yes it does, read your drivers manual, you know, the one you were supposed to read to take the test to get your license! To Merge, especially onto an expressway or 4 lane highway means using the onramp to increase your speed to match the speed of the traffic you wish to BLEND into. Not drive 45 mph then pull all the way across 2 lanes of traffic to the left lane and block everyone on the road!!

The way countyman is pushing the Carmax area, I wonder if he stands to make a hefty profit by some big business coming into that area!

I see this everyday

A car will be on the on-ramp. Car will be running faster than I am and ahead of me. Just as they reach the merge point they finally check traffic. They see this big orange truck and hit the brakes. If they would just put down the damn phone and check traffic while on the ramp it would be easier for everybody.

You would have loved this one. Driving to the airport this morning on I-85, traffic all of a sudden slows down in the left lane. I mean really slows down. Keep in mind it is pitch dark. I figured a accident was up ahead. When I finally got over in the next lane and to the slowdown, a lady was driving 50 in the left lane and just texting away. She was totally oblivious to the mess she was causing behind her.

The RINO's Caved.

The RINO's Caved.

The current proposal has Congress ONLY voting to DISAPPROVE DEBT Increases, as opposed to approving one. Such a change would limit debt-ceiling negotiations to a veto-proof majority. Thus allowing congress to avoid having to address the Elephant and/or The Jackass in the room scenario.

This is just like the Congressional Pay Raise Bill passed back in the 1990's. If they don't vote against it they will continue to get automatic
raises. When was the last time they voted NOT to get a raise?

This is nothing more than Political avoidance.
IF THIS PASSES, From now on the US will have Automatic Debt ceiling increases. In short a Blank check to spend and all the funds $$$$ they
wish.

A Words To The Wise.
Given the RINO cave-in, we should expect the attitude at mid-term and the 2016 elections to swing to dumping RINO's. Expect to see a lot 3 and 4 way Republican races. If 1 new candidate in each race does not garner enough Independent votes expect to see RINO's dumped and LIB's elected.

If the LIB's get control of the house,
Stop and think of all the reg's and laws Obama, Reid and Nancy wanted or tried and failed to pass that could then be rubber stamped.

Tires

A Richmond County resident can take tires to the Richmond County landfill for disposal. If you take five or fewer tires and also include a bag of household garbage, they will let you drop them off for free. If you reside outside Richmond County, you are supposed to pay a small fee. If you are a business, you are supposed to use another method to dispose of your tires.

"RANT CONCERNING THE decision

"RANT CONCERNING THE decision of county officials"

I have a RANT for EVERY decision our county officials have made....especially the elected officials but most of the department heads too. They have turned against us. All they know how to do is raise taxes, cut services, and double the fees. They are all about building empires on the backs of the taxpayers. We have a GARBAGE empire that isn't functioning too well and provides less service than before at twice the cost and now the ENGINEERING folks are getting a RAIN TAX empire. All while our local village idiots, the county commissioners who helped build the Paul Simon and "associates" empire, sit and bob their heads up and down like those dolls in the back windows of a car. They have NO CONSIDERATION for the taxpayers....especially the taxpayers in SOUTHEAST RICHMOND COUNTY. It's all about kickbacks and influence. Consolidation was like a blood drive to keep the "old city" alive and the rural areas of the county were the designated DONORS. What a deal.....the authority to tax them and not give them any representation. When Consolidation first started I thought is was just a simple ambush robbery but, after seeing what they have done to South Augusta and Southeast Richmond County, I now know this was a robbery/murder. When your own government is out to kill you, you don't have many options for defending yourself.

QUESTION: What is the NEW FEDERAL Debt Ceiling?

Been digging for 10 mins.
It seems every article and every politician is avoiding clearly stating the new limit figure.

WHY, is it OPEN ENDED through Jan. 2014?

Something to think about.

Section four of the 14th Amendment to the United States constitution states:

"The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorised by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned".

Legal scholars, and others including former US president Bill Clinton, have suggested the 14th could be used to argue that the debt limit itself is unconstitutional.

INTERESTING NOTE:
There is buy off pork in that bill
The see the surprising "pork" added to the bill in the dead of night and whom lucked out.

Facts not opinions

The facts don't lie and Bass Pro obviously wanted to be located at the VAR or Carmax area. How can the Carmax lose neighbors when they don't have any? How can the area lose businesses when the only existing business is the Carmax? The land around the Carmax was completely undeveloped until a few years ago when the Mason Mcknight Parkway opened. The last rant is completely somebody's opinion, and obviously false.

''THAT is changing as we post ....really, it is.....smell the coffee.''

It's sad that a few people on here continue to have a bias against Richmond County.. I remember when Seenitb4 commented on the Bass Pro article that developers are noticing the growth and how great Columbia County is. The article's related to the movie theater or Cabela's in North Richmond had no comment though.

What is happening today in Columbia County that is changing the dynamic? The most popular shopping destination in Columbia County is the Mullins Crossing shopping center located in Evans. The Gateway in Grovetown is growing, but their building Applebee's for example.

How can somebody compare those basic stores at the Gateway or Mullins Crossing against the Carmax area or Furys Ferry/Riverwatch pkwy?

The Carmax area was initially the Wheeler Town Park development, and even landed Gander Mountain/Nothern Tool before the recession.
http://chronicle.augusta.com/stories/2008/02/07/bus_186501.shtml

The Avenue Furys Ferry was a planned upscale lifestyle center before the recession.

Concentrate on facts only

''The way countyman is pushing the Carmax area, I wonder if he stands to make a hefty profit by some big business coming into that area!'

I'm only looking at the facts and developers will do the same thing... They don't have a bias against Richmond County and only want to increase their profits.

Ask yourself a simple question? How many areas of the metro would Bass Pro, Gander Mountain, and Northern Tool even consider? Why did the first Carmax store outside of metro Atlanta locate their?

Facts about the Carmax area
1. Located next to West Augusta
2. Located next to Martinez
3. Proximity to I-520
4. Proximity to I-20

Please stay calm ctyman

The world won't end because some of us prefer Columbia county over Richmond county....that is life..

I can't stand the POLITICS in Augusta & that alone would keep me from buying there...so smoke that!

What is amazing is...you skip right over dichotomys post & say nothing....he has blasted the county (with good reason) & you ignore him.......could it be, you know he is RIGHT!!!

Common sense tells "most" of us that the growth is going outward......why ignore that....new malls--new restaurants & etc......all the needs a woman loves....also a safer area to live & shop.....so stop getting upset when we post to your over abundance of good tidings.

I don't have any problem with none of your comments and I don't take them personally either. I do respect the comments from Dichotomy, but how are they any more important than my own.

I don't mind if you prefer Columbia County, but you don't have to bash Richmond in order to pump up Columbia.

Their are zero malls under construction in metro Augusta, and the majority of new shopping(Cabela's, Whole Foods, H&M, Michael Kors, etc)/restaurants(Texas Roadhouse, Genghis Grill, Craft & Vine, Cookout, etc) are coming to Richmond County.

Augusta Mall

Look at the area around the mall and how it has changed since the mall was built.. Don't tell me it hasn't gone down. It has. Women used to go there alone and meet friends or shop alone. You may want to check, that doesn't happen anymore. Even with deputies patrolling the parking lot and mall security, I don't feel it's safe for my family members to go there alone. Would I go there alone? Yes, but only early in the day, while the thugs are still sleeping off the night before and before the teens begin crowding people off the walkways. Also when I go, I am prepared for the thug who may be an early riser!! Augusta Mall is a great location, but needs to have the neighborhood cleaned up.

Augusta mall

What facts do you have to back up the claims about women not going to the mall by themselves? The comment doesn't hold much weight, because the first H&M(two story) in the state of Georgia outside metro Atlanta is coming to the mall. The first Michael Kors boutique store outside of metro Atlanta is underway at the mall, and both of those stores require female shoppers.

Why does a safe area need to be cleaned up? Or do you mean in terms of becoming more visually appealing which I agree? The majority of crime at the mall itself revolves around shoplifting.

The Augusta mall looks much nicer than when it first opened decades ago. The Augusta mall is most upscale mall in the state outside of metro Atlanta and can even compete against Perimeter, Northpoint, Cumberland, Mall of Georgia, etc. The Augusta mall is more upscale compared to any mall in the state of South Carolina.

The Augusta Exchange was built and took some of the businesses away from the Augusta mall area, but it had nothing to do with security. The Augusta Exchange simply became the new area, and some of the businesses followed behind. The Augusta mall built the promenade section a few years back, and transformed into a major regional shopping destination. The retailers like Apple, Sephora, Pandora, Micheal Kors, H&M, etc don't have locations outside of metro Atlanta. The Micheal Kors boutique store and H&M don't have locations in South Carolina either.

The Walmart is under construction and new businesses have opened in the Kroger shopping center/TJ Maxx shopping center. The I-520/Wrightsboro improvements and the widening of Marks Church rd will have in terms of the beautification.
