CONCERNING “sheriff’s nephews arrested.” They’ll get off. They have connections. If it was me, they would lock me up and throw away the key. Read about their slap on the hand later.

I HAVE NOT SEEN anything about the breach in security at the Navy Yard. Surely someone has to be held accountable for letting a deranged person with a rifle into the facility? With proper security the shootings would not have occurred. The president jumps on the bandwagon of gun control instead of telling us what he is going to do about mental illness in this country.

GEORGIA TECH GETS a big ACC win over North Carolina and gets one small article in this paper. UGA gets a cupcake win over mighty North Texas and gets three articles, and two of those take up almost two complete pages. Does the inequality have to be so blatant with this paper? It really is getting old.

RAVES TO THE Richmond County Sheriff’s Office for the crackdown in Fairington/Town and Country neighborhoods on the speeders going through here. The speed limit is 25/20, and most people on Teakwood Drive run 45-plus mph. Keep up the good work.

THERE IS A leash law in Harlem; however, it does not appear to apply to the first lady of Harlem.

YOUR FRONT-PAGE story about a sickle cell GRU grant gave a lot of info, but did it ever tell us who provided the $8.8 million.

A QUOTE FROM MSNBC.com, “President Barack Obama urged supporters on Saturday to ‘go back at it’ and pursue gun control measures after mass shootings in Washington and Chicago in the past week put the spotlight back onto the problem of gun violence in the U.S.” Does anyone else see the irony in this? Both D.C. and Chicago have draconian gun control laws.

TO THE PERSON ranting about freeloaders and their “benefits” on Sept. 30: Realize that envy is one of the seven deadly sins. Perhaps those who feel these thoughts should be forced to walk in the other person’s shoes. I have. It’s not the ride you envision. I thank God for helping me through it, and I thank those kind enough to lend their hand.

PLACES SUCH AS Goodwill wonder why donations are down? You have so many people who keep saying they need handouts when there are already so many places giving those. Then you also see folks panhandling and getting gobs of money from maybe several people.

The truckers are really shutting down

WASHINGTON -- A coalition of tea party truck drivers is planning a government shutdown demonstration on the Capital Beltway that rings Washington.

"Truckers Ride For The Constitution" -- known as "Truckers To Shutdown America" before their original Facebook page was shut down -- plans to clog the Interstate 495 inner loop from Oct. 11 to Oct. 13.

The truckers said they hope create enough of a backup on the highway to express their frustration with the "lawlessness" of members of Congress "who refuse to work on behalf of the American people."

T3 asked:

Name?

Leave Grovetown out of it. Though its growth and development has been magnificent, "Grovetown" still carries some stigma from the past.

Exhibition

Okay, IAD and SeenIt do not think Grovetown should be in the name of the new hall. But "The Columbia County Exhibition Center" is just too clunky. Let's have some suggestions from Chronicle commenters.

Naming Rights

Hey, that's a great idea to have a private business pay for the privilege of having their name on the center. Only Columbia County should be smarter than those who have gone before. Instead of selling the naming rights, Columbia County should lease the naming rights for five-year terms.

People seeking to name the center should be cautioned that the name should have no more than eight syllables total. The shorter, the better. And it should be forbidden to use the word "Junior" or "Jr." in the name.

What a mess

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. - Repairs to two southbound lanes of Interstate 85 are taking longer than planned. The Georgia Department of Transportation says emergency repairs to the two inside lanes of I-85 south will continue through midday on Wednesday, and the lanes will remain closed until they're completed.

GDOT says drainage problems are to blame for the emergency closures, which began on Monday. They say a huge crater opened up when the a drain failed and the road collapsed under the interstate. Crews worked continuously overnight trying to repair the damage.

Both the HOV lane and the adjacent lane on the left are shut down as crews repair the failed drainage structure and fill a void created under the pavement. They'll be working nonstop until it's fixed, and GDOT said Tuesday morning that will now take until midday on Wednesday.

GDOT says drivers should avoid the area, which is just north of Clairmont Road, if possible. If they can't avoid the area, drivers are urged to slow down and expect delays through midday Wednesday.

Give up sex/alcohol before coffee..

The survey by Le Meridien Hotels & Resorts found that 54 percent of people surveyed around the world said they make their first cup of coffee at home, and 78 percent said that instead of giving up coffee, they would rather give up alcohol, social media and sex with their spouse for a whole year.
Read more trending stories

Among travelers, 73 percent of respondents said they would give up TV and Internet in a hotel for a good cup of coffee.

And guess who just added 100 coffee specialists to their worldwide chain? Le Meridien, of course .... which begs the question: If the survey respondents had said they preferred morning sex over morning coffee, would the chain have hired 100 sex specialists instead?

"The Tea Party needs a really

"The Tea Party needs a really good PR firm."

What for. No matter what goes on they are mocked and insulted. Everyone says the Republicans are a dead party after the next election anyway. So, we still have a little over a year to shut it all down and make our point. We are either right or wrong and if we are going to die anyway it's time to find out which it is. No point in kowtowing and caving in now. Like I told my ex-wife, if you are going to keep accusing me of things I might as well go do them. Obama says he won't negotiate....I hope Boehner doesn't feel very talkative either. If Obama is stupid enough to refuse to pay the interest on the debt and Social Security with the tax money coming in they the "default" is on him because they is plenty of money to do that even if they don't raise the debt limit. He would simply have to cut out some other things.

Which brings up a good question. You always hear the politicians talk about Social Security and Medicare running out of money but you NEVER hear them talk about WELFARE running out of money.....why not?

@ dichotomy

Sure, you are correct. But how are truckers shutting down the beltway going to serve any good purpose? Make a point at the expense of innocent people who need to get to work or school? Does anyone think a mother taking her child to the doctor is going to change her perspective of the political mess we are in? I see it backfiring. JMO.
