One of several wrecks on Interstate 20 on Tuesday morning near the Grovetown exit diverted traffic into the median.

Several wrecks Tuesday morning caused traffic delays on Interstate 20 for more than an hour.

The first wreck occurred in the eastbound lane just east of the Grovetown exit when a vehicle hit a guardrail. That led to eight more wrecks in the eastbound lanes, all within two miles of the Grovetown exit, including one on the I-20 off-ramp, according to Columbia County sheriff’s Capt. Steve Morris.

At least one eastbound lane was closed for about an hour, leading to severe traffic slow-downs and backups. At the scene of one wreck involving two SUVs that blocked both lanes just east of the exit, traffic was diverted onto the median.

Only one wreck caused injuries, but nothing life-threatening, Morris said.
