Aiken County sheriff’s Capt. Eric Abdullah said firefighters
were called to the two-story brick home in the 2200 block of Edgefield Highway about 2 a.m. Tuesday.
Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton said one male and two female bodies were recovered from the home.
The bodies have not been positively identified, Carlton said Tuesday afternoon, but are scheduled for autopsy in Newberry, S.C., this morning.
Both sides of the highway were lined with cars as officials investigated, and people who appeared to be family members comforted one another.
The large, Colonial-style brick home featuring shutters and white columns was last valued at
about $270,000, according to the Aiken County tax assessor’s Web site.
The origin of the fire is being investigated by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and the sheriff’s office. Abdullah said criminal activity is not suspected in the fire.
The back portion of the home sustained the majority of fire damage.
Police have not said whether there is any indication the occupants tried to get out of the house.
