Two Richmond County sheriff’s deputies found a small marijuana garden growing outside a Cherry Tree Crossing apartment Thursday while on foot patrol in the public housing complex, according to an incident report.

The two officers reported smelling a strong odor of marijuana around 2:15 p.m. while walking the 1600 block of McCauley Street. The deputies followed the scent to a residence where they saw a fenced garden next to an apartment front porch.

Next to some tomatoes and green peppers were two marijuana plants – one four feet tall and another three feet tall – tied to a wooden stake. A large bag of fertilizer was found on the front porch.

No one was inside the apartment at the time, but officers spoke with the Augusta Housing Authority and obtained arrest warrants for the resident – identified in the incident report as Terry McRae, 54 – after field testing the marijuana as positive.

Not in Cherry Tree Crossing

Say it is not so, you never hear of any crime happening in this neighborhood! He probably was growing it for medical purposes.

Appears to be a very fruitful garden

This 54 year appears to have a green thumb
Tomatoes, green peepers and weed.
I'm sure there are a lot worse things going on in this neighborhood.
Heck if this were Augusta , Colorado there would not even be a problem.

With only two plants its

With only two plants its doubtful the Mexican Cartels would feel any impact . The inability to stop tons of marijuana and cash crossing the border makes this bust sound silly. At least public support dollars weren't going to a criminal enterprise and staying local.

How stupid can the grower be?

If it waddles like a Duck, talks like a duck generally speaking it is a Duck. Maybe this duck just wanted to be on "COP'S"

Yet another example of people thinking they can do what they want, where they want, when they want, because, Change Has Come To The soon to be renamed USSA (United Socialist States of America)

It is a matter of time

Before a case comes before the courts arguing a state is interfering with interstate commerce, or is failing to apply laws equally and in a uniform manner.

Then we won't have a group of guy sitting under an
"EBT Accepted Here" Sign drinking Brown Bagged Beers.
Like I see a lot at a corner store on Richmond Hill and Lumpkin Rd.

Brown Bagged Beers.

That is happening so frequently that it's being ignored by the ones who can stop it!!

Vegetables and a little weed

The old guy is growing some vegetables and a little weed for himself. If he weren't living in public housing, I'd say leave him alone. If you're living in public housing I'd arrest you for vagrancy.

Strange..

The foot patrol smelled pot and followed the smell not to find someone smoking it, but instead a small garden that contain 2 pot plants in addition to other types of plants. I had no idea a pot plant emitted an strong odor like that. What are they blood hounds?

Apparently you've never been close to a budding plant. This time of year they smell like a skunk!

Hey maybe if we can get him

Hey maybe if we can get him off the weed he will be more productive and can move out of public housing. What's with the garden-he don't get food stamps??? If you can manage a job, are productive, and want to smoke some weed I don't have a problem with that (it's a huge waste of time but so is sports)-but if you aren't productive and just want to stay screwed up-then you aren't doing anybody any good. Just waiting to die I guess.

The problem they'll face is proving it was actually this guy's plant. You already know any competent defense attorney is going to pull the "it wasn't his plant/he didn't know" line...

"V"

Ever hear of a "Victory Garden"? Two plants, personal use, and a salad on the side. Maybe it was to add to the salad.

Something has been bothering me about the story

all morning. Something that just did not ring right in the back of my mind, then in dawned on me.

Given the commonality of marijuana use in the area,
How did the plants , planted next to a sidewalk, manage to last long enough to grow several feet in height, without being picked or stolen?

It just does not seem possible.

Seriously though, with all

Seriously though, with all the crime that happens on a daily basis in Cherry Tree. Do we really care about a couple weed plants? Maybe we should look into legalization and then we might not have to designate certain areas "slums" because dispensaries will move in and fix up what the slumlord millionaires won't!

Taste Test

Maybe the officers did a taste test. Does green, undried marijuana have a distinctive taste?

Of course, the story does not say the two plants were actively growing. It says they were tied to a wooden stake. Could the two plants have been left outside to dry?

Miss Mary next door yells over, "Hey, Terry! Whatcha doin' over there?" Terry yells back, "Oh, just some weedin' in my garden!"...or so Miss Mary thought. What he really said was, "Oh, just some weed in my garden!"
