Weather should be normal in the upcoming months, expert says

Though this weekend might see a little rain, the Augusta area should begin to dry out after an unusually rainy summer.

“The three-month outlook – September, October, November – has us equal chances for temperature and precipitation, which means it will be more normal. We are not expecting above-average rainfall or above-normal heat,” said Dave Schuetrum, of the National Weather Service in Columbia.

August, typically one of the area’s hottest months, was cooler and wetter than usual. The highest temperature recorded was 95 degrees on Aug. 29, well below the record 108 degrees reached in 2007 and 1983.

August’s lowest temperature was 56 degrees on Aug. 27, a few degrees warmer than the record 52 degrees set in 2004.

“That kind of puts things into perspective,” Schuetrum said. Augusta has measured almost 45.5 inches of rainfall for 2013, more than 14 inches above normal.

The area got a little more than 1.5 inches above normal for the month, bringing August’s rainfall to 5.84 inches.

He said there is a good chance the region will experience another heat wave before fall’s cooler temperatures set in, and things will begin to dry out.

“We won’t see much rain for the next couple of weeks,” he said.

Thursday’s forecast is sunny with some morning fog, and highs in the low 90s. Thursday night will be clear with temperatures in the upper 60s. Friday will be mostly sunny with a 20 percent chance of showers and a possible thunderstorm, with highs around 90. The weekend is expected to be mostly sunny with a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, and highs in the middle to upper 80s.

Normal, as in the last few years, or thirty years ago when we saw snow about every winter. They didn't really explain it well.
