Afghan attackers kill Georgia soldier

ATLANTA — A Georgia soldier who was based in Colorado has died of combat injuries in Afghanistan, military officials said.

The U.S. Department of Defense said Sunday that 28-year-old Staff Sgt. Joshua J. Bowden died Aug. 31.

Bowden, who was from the west Georgia town of Villa Rica, died after enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire while on patrol in Ghazni, Afghanistan, authorities said.

He was assigned to the 242nd Ordnance Battalion (EOD), 71st Ordnance Group (EOD), at Fort Carson, Colo.

Bowden joined the Army in late 2005 and was on his second deployment, The Gazette of Colorado Springs reported. He also deployed to Afghanistan from 2008-09.

Bowden’s former karate instructor, Samantha Hostettler, recalled him as a smart student who earned his black belt at a young age and was protective of his sister.

Students robbed on Georgia Tech street

ATLANTA — Authorities say two Georgia Tech students were robbed at gunpoint while walking along a campus street.

Police say the crime happened about 2:15 a.m. Monday as the students walked east on Sixth Street near Fowler Street.

A crime alert from the university states that two men approached the students and demanded their belongings. Authorities say one of the men was armed with a handgun.

Woman run over by her own SUV dies

GAFFNEY, S.C. — Author­ities say an 82-year-old Gaffney woman has died nearly a week after she was dragged by her own SUV in her driveway.

Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler said Mary Parris died Monday at a Spartanburg hospital, six days after she was hurt.

Fowler said Parris tried to get out of her SUV without putting it in park Aug. 27, and the vehicle began to roll. He said Parris was trapped by the door as the SUV rolled about 35 feet and ended up trapped by her vehicle when it stopped.
