WHERE: Outside the former Augusta-Richmond County Public Library main branch on the corner of Greene and Ninth streets.

Overgrown bushes and weeds and litter can be seen outside.

WHAT: Plastic cups and bottles, a wood board, empty cigarette cartons and other debris litter the overgrown bushes outside the former library. Weeds on the sidewalk grew several feet high before they were recently cut down. Vagrants frequently squat outside the building’s main entrance portico.

WHO’S RESPONSIBLE: The building, vacant since the new library opened across the street in June 2010, is owned by the city. Administrator Fred Russell said maintenance of the building’s exterior was not assigned to a city work crew.

ACTION PROMISED: “I will take a look at it and we will correct the problem,” Russell said. “We should be maintaining it. The neighborhood needs to be maintained and we haven’t done a very good job of that.”

Looks pretty bad

Looks pretty bad. The disgraceful appearance of a government owned building is a symptom of many things. Did no one care? The "not my job" attitude prevails.

Worry

Not to mention the "what, me worry?" attitude.

I'm not sure that even

I'm not sure that even "shaming" these folks into doing their jobs will work. It's always reactive and just a band aid approach to fixing things.

As a side note, AC (Pardon Our Mess folks) please follow up on these complaints and let readers know what, if anything, has been done.

Regency Mall again

Does this view remind you of something? The great Regency Mall maybe?

How long will it take for the rest of the county to sink to a new low....stop pretending you don't have problems....it is in PLAIN VIEW!

Trash pick up?

At least they are consistent. No one in Augusta knows anything about picking up trash, it would seem!

Had someone not brought it to

Had someone not brought it to the attention of the administration, one wonders if it would have been ignored.

Who

Who was doing the job before the library moved and why did they just drop the maintenance. Now that is the question that needs to be answered. Someone needs to take a hit on this.

Not nice to see...

Not nice to see that over 3/4 of my comment was removed. It is not harassment, attacking or racist or obscene language. It was simple stated truth. If you can't get that through the local paper you may just a well quit reading it.
