A broken toe didn’t stop Patricia Roberts from shaking her rump Saturday at the Augusta Exchange Club Fairgrounds.

While Theodis Ealey covered James Brown, Roberts danced in the middle of a fairway lined with food vendors at KISS-FM’s Family Reunion. Her cousin, Dianna Bonner, laughed as she recorded Roberts with a smartphone.

Roberts has been on medical leave since breaking her toe at work two months ago.

“I’m not supposed to be here, but I said you know what? I’ve been in the house for two months. It’s my birthday. I’m going to celebrate my birthday,” said Roberts, who turned 43 on Saturday.

The festival was created four years ago to appeal to a slightly older group than the station’s PowerFest, said coordinator Minnesota Fattz.

Acts included national artists Avant and the Chi-Lites – who had hits in the 1970sincluding Oh Girl – and local acts the Klass Band and Eric Mayweather.

For Mayweather, who has played the event the past three years, the show feels like a family reunion.

“I get a chance to see people that I don’t get to see, that I haven’t seen in a while. And we all live in Augusta,” he said.

Mayweather is an instructor for the training academy with the Georgia Department of Corrections, but he considers music his full-time job. Every weekend he’s on the road with his band, the Finesse Band, which leaves him little time to socialize.

The event was almost like a reunion for Roberts as well. Twelve of her friends and family members came along to help her celebrate her special day.

Roberts said the event was just as wonderful as she thought it would be.

“I’ve done danced myself to death,” she said. “Don’t you see me sweating? I probably don’t have on any makeup.”

Medical Leave for 2 months

She has been on medical leave for two months for a broken toe. Glad it was not a broken leg. Broken leg would probably mean 12 months medical leave.
