Dogfighting sting nets 12 arrests; 367 dogs seized

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — An investigation into organized dogfighting and gambling in the Southeast resulted in 12 arrests and the seizure of 367 pits bulls in one of the nation’s largest crackdowns on the crime.

A federal and state investigation into dogfighting and gambling has resulted in the arrest of 12 people. More than 360 pit bulls were seized Friday in three states.

The arrests announced Monday by federal, state and local officials stemmed from raids Friday on homes in Alabama and Georgia and the seizure of more than $500,000 in cash that investigators believe was tied to illegal gambling on dogfights.

“I believe if Dante were alive today and rewriting the Inferno that the lowest places in hell would be reserved for those who commit cruelty to our animals and to our children,” U.S. Attorney George Beck said at a news conference.

Court-appointed attorneys for some of the defendants said they plan to plead not guilty Wednesday.

The defendants are charged with conspiring to promote and sponsor dogfights and arranging for dogs to be at the fights in several Alabama counties and in Holly Springs, Miss., between 2009 and 2013.

Most of the defendants also are charged with conducting an illegal gambling business. In an indictment returned by a federal grand jury in Opelika, one defendant is accused of winning $35,000 at a fight in Waverly in August 2011. Two others were stopped by officers with $12,000 in cash after attending a dogfight at a bar in Macon County in February 2012, the indictment said.

Federal, state and local officials simultaneously served search warrants Friday to make arrests and seize dogs in Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi.

Officials said some pit bulls were so malnourished their ribs were sticking out and others had wounds that required emergency care.

“Those animals can’t speak like you and I,” Coffee County Sheriff David Sutton said. “We chose to speak for them, and I believe we sent a message out.”

Officials with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Humane Society of the United States said the organizations are caring for the animals, which will have to be kept as evidence while the case progresses. They hope to retrain the dogs and get them new homes.

Charged are: Donnie Anderson, 48, of Auburn; Demontt Allen, 37, of Houston, Texas; William Antone Edwards, 42, of Brantley; William Oneil Edwards, 39, of Elba; Robin Stinson, 40, of Elba; Michael Martin, 54, of Auburn; Lawrence Watford, 35, of Adel, Ga.; Ricky Van Le, 24, of Biloxi, Miss.; David Sellers, 52, of Opelika; Sandy Brown, 47, of Brownsville; Carlton Tippens, of Georgia; and Irkis Forest, of Theodore. More arrests are expected.

Seems to me the solution is

Seems to me the solution is in the photo. Put the perps on those chains till trial day arrives. Oh, don't worry, we'll feed ya..... Well, you know. And at night we will let you guys get some exercise. You know...... Fight it out. Then back on the chain gang. Water every Wednesday, all you can drink.

Missed Priorities

I wish they would do some investigations into the Wall Street crooks of greed who bilked millions of Americans out of their savings and homes and investments.

So far, NO ONE has been indicted.

Dog-fighting doesn't affect my life - hungry and homeless Americans affects my life. It's a horrendous thing, yes - but suffering human beings take priority over dog fights. There are malnourished children in the US with "ribs sticking out".

367 pits bulls

Matt Bershadker, president and CEO of ASPCA said.
“Today we ended the torture of hundreds of abused and neglected animals,” he said. “Never again will these dogs be forced to fight, live in squalor, or be neglected and deprived of the bare necessities.”

What he danced around and did not come right out and say was likely most of the "Trained" pits will have to be put down.

Because no matter what "the experts say", UN-Training cannot be assured nor the safety of the future owners that would adopt one of the aggressively trained dog.

Personally I would support a 5 year Prison time sentence for each animal.

Pits are not my favorite due

Pits are not my favorite due to their capacity to do serious harm; but anyone who would mistreat them or any other dog are pretty low on the evolutionary tree. They will do YOU harm too if they would do this to an animal.

I Know What I'd Like to Do to Them

Line all twelve of them up and chain them to a stump in the swamp, and leave them for alligator bait -- they taste just like chicken. Unfortunately 'nocnoc' makes an sad point of truth. First thing I did was scan the list for a "Vick". The problem we have in this country is that we don't treat abuse - child, elder, or animal, as a Capital offense which it should be. I think they should all be chained together in a chain-gang, for the rest of their miserable lives.

Anyone that could take a loving and trusting animal and use it for a blood sport should be put to death themselves. Run out of dogs and use kids next? This is as sick as it gets and should be dealt with swiftly and harshly.

Specta, while I agree with

Specta, while I agree with some of what you say. The children have parents who could work if they would but are too sorry to and choose to live off the working class and the dogs do not. I will take a good dog as a friend instead of a sorry parent anytime. Maybe some of the people doing the betting are taking the family money and loosing it-happens all the time with those kinds of people.

The ultimate solution: Chain

The ultimate solution: Chain the perps all together, and tell them the last one standing goes free. Let them fight it out just like they were doing with the dogs. Then if there is a last one standing put him in a cell with a bunch of hungry pit bulls and tell him that is the last obstacle to freedom. Until the punishment meets the crime the crime will continue.

specsta, if there are "malnourished children in the US with "ribs sticking out" it is because of sorry parents created by the Great Society, liberals, democrats and black leaders not the Wall Street crooks.

The treatment of these dogs

The treatment of these dogs was deplorable but it would be just as deplorable to take those responsible out and kill them. Human life (even the life of those we find despicable) is still more valuable than that of an animal. I love dogs but the Lord didn't give dogs a soul. I'm sure all the animal rights activists will tear into me like hungry pit bulls!

is always saying "ribs sticking out"....could you please tell me where I can see this. I have yet seen any child in Augusta that have ribs sticking out. As a matter of fact, the only thing I see sticking out, are oversized under wares and anything associated with them.

The problem is not that complicated; it starts as a lit match

and it applies to scum like these men as well as to the predatory gangbangers who target anyone and everyone, as well as to people who would kill their own children.

Too many people for too many years weren't held accountable for their own choices and got rescued by the government or their mommies and daddies. They never grew a conscience and they never had a clue about social responsibility. They were raised to look out for themselves and to make sure they got "their own", regardless of who earns and pays for it. And this isn't strictly about welfare and entitlement programs. The whole culture has lost its former level of civilization. The entertainment industry is just as culpable as any libtard politico, regardless of party.

We have been raising a nation increasingly made up of sociopaths for about 50 years, and they all seem to be reproducing with abandon. After all, why shouldn't they? There are no teeth to any moral or social behavior standards any more, and Uncle Sam, courtesy of the taxpayers, will pay for any little sociopaths-in-training that they pop out.

What need is there for a conscience or for teaching a child that his life has more meaning and purpose than merely to satisfy his appetites, whatever they might be? Pushing out faith and values from public education left a vacuum that has been filed by the absolutely lowest standard of social interaction, which is all based on survival/predator and prey.

And so we get people like these monsters, and worse. We also get people who do even crueler things to children. For example, look at what some children are being trained to do and be, even in what looks like a fairly reasonable neighborhood:

But hey, everybody feels so much happier, right?

We need to teach the pre-teens how to shoot a gun. Maybe this BS will stop.

I bet there were parents sitting on a porch cheering them on!

OMG they equate cruelty to

OMG they equate cruelty to animals to cruelty to children. You know this pathological anthropomorphization of dogs into humans is psychologically screwed up and some people really need help. They're dogs-a domesticated wolf -we breed just like cattle or chickens or pecan trees. But I don't encourage people abuse any plant or animal-just don't equate them to humans. Good golly. Just anti-science, ant-evolution, anti-human.

CG, This is a good example of what has been going on for the last 30 to 40 yrs. The liberal media, progressives, democrats and black leaders including some black churches have been spreading racial hatred. About 20yrs. ago a black friend told me, "cush if you white folks knew what went on in black churches ya'll would burn all of them down'. I ask what he meant but that is all he would say.
