Governor's Honors Program alumni sought

The Governor’s Office of Student Achievement and the Governor’s Honors Program Alumni Association are seeking the names and contact information for more than 20,000 alumni from the program’s 50 years in operation.

In August, Gov. Nathan Deal signed an executive order that transferred administration of the Governor’s Honors Program to the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement.

The program is a four-week residential program designed to offer educational opportunities to gifted and artistically talented high school students that is not typically offered during the school year. It is funded by the General Assembly and is offered at no cost to participants. High school sophomores and juniors in public, private and home schools can be nominated in science, arts, foreign language, technology and math.

Graduates of the program have completed college and graduate programs and become successful in the business, artistic, legal, medical and political fields.

Alumni whose contact information is updated by Sept. 3 will be invited to attend a gala fundraiser and silent auction at the Governor’s Mansion in October. The gala will be held in celebration of the program’s 50th anniversary.

“The first ever GHP gala will be a great opportunity to reconnect with old GHP friends and make new ones among a group that brings so much pride to their nominating teachers and schools,” alumni association President Roger Harrison said in a news release. “Honoring alumni success at the Governor’s Mansion is a great way to keep in touch and hear how the program positively affected kids years after they participated in GHP.”
