James Fortune to perform at free concert

Augusta gospel music fans are getting another chance to see recording artist James Fortune in concert, and this time it’s for free.

Less than two months after fans were duped into attending a concert featuring local acts instead of the nationally known artists that they were originally promised, Fortune is keeping his word on performing a free make-up concert.

According to a post on P.U.R.E. Worship’s Facebook page, Fortune, who was originally slated to perform at the June 27 concert, is making the trip to Augusta for a free concert on Aug. 22 at Beulah Grove Baptist Church.

The concert, titled “Let the Healing Begin,” will also feature Grammy award-winning gospel singer Hezekiah Walker and Augusta’s City Stars United. The doors open at 6 p.m.

On June 27, a concert promoted by New York-based Dower Live and advertised as including Fortune, Vickie Winans and Tamela Mann, was held at Tabernacle Baptist Church.

When the artists didn’t show, several fans took to Twitter to voice their discontent. Fortune, who did not make the trip to Augusta, tweeted on the day of the concert that it had been “postponed to a later date.”

Winans, who arrived in Augusta to perform, sat in her hotel room while the concert went on without her.

“I was dressed in a turquoise dress like I was going to the Grammys,” she said in June. “Now I’m out about $600,” after flying to Augusta at her own expense. She also wasn’t paid what she was supposed to earn for performing, she said.

The concert’s promoter, Sharif King, deflected responsibility for misleading the concertgoers, saying the concert was a “Tabernacle Baptist Church event.” He said it was the church’s responsibility to inform the public that only local artists would perform.

Tabernacle Baptist responded that its only role was leasing the venue.

“We didn’t even do any of the promoting for the event,” Tabernacle Baptist spokeswoman Natasha Carter said.

Winans told The Augusta Chronicle in June that she also would perform a make-up show for her fans in Augusta.
