The death of an inmate at the Jefferson County Jail on Saturday night is being investigated by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

Sonya Cecilia Mitchell, 33, of Atlanta, went into cardiac arrest about 8:15 p.m. and could not be revived, said Lt. Robert Chalker in a news release. Chalker said Mitchell complained she wasn’t feeling well and an ambulance was called while staff tried to make her more comfortable.

When EMS personnel arrived, Mitchell was in cardiac arrest. She was taken to Jefferson Hospital in Louisville where attempts to revive her were unsuccessful.

An autopsy was performed at the GBI Crime Lab on Monday but results have not been released.

Mitchell had been at the Jefferson County Jail since Wednesday, Aug. 7, and was being held on a Superior Court probation warrant.
