Preston Barber (from left), Jonathan and the Rev. Sandra Leightner, Ralph Sanders and Richard Isdell place the page marker at Psalm 23 in the first pulpit Bible from the 1850s at St. James United Methodist Church.
An inscription notes that Mrs. Phinizy presented -- in the 1850s -- the first pulpit Bible to St. James United Methodist Church. The Bible was restored in 1962 and forgotten in storage for more than 50 years until it was unveiled to the congregation at a fellowship after the morning service on Sunday. "We're excited about this wonderful discovery of God that goes back to the beginning of this church," the Rev. Leightner said in a prayer.
