Comments from readers:

RAVES AND heartfelt thank you to Dr. Barry Strock and his compassionate staff of Veterinary Healthcare Associates of North Augusta for their love and genuine concern for the animals in their care and to the owners. Their patients are treated like family, and my family will be forever grateful.

HOW CAN SHERIFF Richard Roundtree charge downtown property owners extra money for more protection? Is that not extortion, which is illegal?

A BIG RAVE to the Augusta Museum of History for the Dog Days of Summer for August. Let’s get our kids and visitors over there to enjoy all two big stories of the museum from Thursdays through Sundays.

AUGUSTA IS GOING up a notch in style with the new 14-auditorium theater that will serve food in some auditoriums and have a restaurant.

RANT TO RICHMOND County Sheriff’s office. Last night, I observed a female officer that was about 5-foot-2 and must have weighed in at about 225 pounds. It did not make me feel safe. There must not be any physical requirements anymore!

CONTINUE TO SUPPORT our local charities such as Salvation Army, Goodwill, Catholic Social Services, etc., by donating used clothing, etc. Avoid dropping off those items at the new red boxes cropping up all over the place since the owners of these boxes are in the business of selling the dropped-off items for profit, which does not benefit charities.

PEOPLE FLY UP and down the highway in Dearing killing dogs and not stopping. One day they will kill a child. Slow down before you hurt or kill somebody.

I HOPE WHOEVER buys that 1935 Augusta National program will donate it to the Augusta Museum of History so that everyone can enjoy seeing what it’s like. In the meantime, Ms. Leslie, can you please post any pages that cover the caddies? Especially with photos?

HOW IS THE SOUTH side supposed to improve if everything is being put on the west side?

WHY ARE THESE men who live in Harrisburg, on Broad Street, allowed to have a dog? They have trash all over their front yard, and they have no grass, and they sit and get drunk all day, on their front porch. I know that they do not take care of this dog. I have reported it to Animal Control in Augusta, and they have done nothing.

North Richmond and South Augusta

#4.. The future growth coming to North Richmond(Riverwatch, Alexander Drive in the Village at Riverwatch, Stevens Creek, & the Riverwatch/Furys Ferry intersection) will simply be amazing.

#9. The Hampton Inn hotel on Gordon Hwy near the Raceway, $172 million Starbucks plant, Butler Creek Greenway(connecting Fort Gordon, Butler Creek Trailhead park, Lombard Mill Pond trail, & Phinizy Swamp), Walgreens/3 acre development at Tobacco rd/ Windsor Spring, Diamond Lakes campgrounds, $115 million Rockwood plants, etc are underway in South Augusta.

Dearing Highway

Try keeping your dogs, and especially your children, off of the highway. Sounds like some folks are not being responsible.

Movies and food

I wonder how that is going to work. Theaters already have sticky floors and garbage strewn about. Imagine having to step in food litter in the dark with nice shoes on. And what about the fatso behind you burping garlic or onions in your direction when trying to watch a flick.

"CONTINUE TO SUPPORT our local charities

Goodwill? What are they doing in there? The CEO makes $725,000 a year from a business --and it is a business-- whose model is to prey on the charity of citizens, accept material for free and sell it at market price? How many non-executives at that organization make more than minimum wage? How many have health coverage?

No, it would be Augusta's clown college, aka county commission; the Grateful Mother can only propose.

"...There must not be any physical requirements..."

Stop being hyperbolic! There are standards for females in law enforcement, and from what I've observed they're: breathing, and weight less than the cruiser and ummmm... well, that may be all of them.

"HOW IS THE SOUTH side

"HOW IS THE SOUTH side supposed to improve if everything is being put on the west side?"

The South side has been written off as a loss. We are the repository for Section 8, rehab centers, HUD housing, and industry. I'm sorry, but we just can't get excited about a drug store and some trails.

When you get around to some restaurants (NOT hamburger joints...and even they don't materialize), some retail shopping (NOT drug stores), and some grocery stores that don't repackage and re-date the "fresh" meat....then let us know countyman.

I can't shop at a hotel, I can't eat at the Starbucks plant, and I can't buy groceries at the Rockwood plant. And if you think I would walk a trail in this end of RC without a gun and a couple of extra clips you are wrong.

We know the county cannot build us restaurants and shopping, but we also know that 17 years of Consolidation policies, Section 8, Taxes, and Planning and Zoning decisions have caused the conditions that keep development, and people, from wanting to come here.

Restaurants

The 3 acres being cleared next to the Walgreens site will attract at least one new restaurant.

The Five Guys in/near the Colony Plaza was approved by the planning/zoning commission, and will begin sooner or later.

Police Protection A Problem With Consolidated Counties

A problem with a combined city-county is equal police protection. The fact is cities all over the country have more resources dedicated to law enforcement than outlying areas. In our consolidated city-county it wouldn’t be right to make the county pay for extra protection for the urban area.

Riverman - makes a good point

But a question I asked in another story.

Why is RCSO spending $$$$$ to purchase State of the Art, New High Tech Toys, like Hi-speed License tag scanners? If RCSO is
cash strapped, manpower short would not the $$$$ be better spent
putting leather on the Downtown streets?

It would seem to me taking care of Low tech basics 1st,would address the needed extra personnel downtown. It did in the past, before Consolidation. (:-) There's that nasty word again.

Or maybe there are other deeper reasons at play? Because I noted in another article that it was estimated there enough extra $$$$ from the Special tax to do the Clean Up of downtown areas. Which then begs the next 2 questions:

Why is the tax greater than the reason needed?
and
Is this just another hidden Downtown Cleanup Tax?

NocNoc, great point from you,

NocNoc, great point from you, too. I'm guessing the extra money was included to implement the "broken window theory." The idea that a clean, well maintained area, has less crime. Who knows?

To this gem...

HOW IS THE SOUTH side supposed to improve if everything is being put on the west side?

What amazes me is that large groups can gather to protest something that happened in Florida...BUT..you can't seem to muster a few to fight what is happening in your everyday lives....when was the last time a group went to a commish meeting & complained about your rant>never

btw..I will hear this..

We can't tell a business where to locate...

That is true enough....the south side will have to do some things that would be inviting to high end business.....we have said on here before that crime free-clean-working adults with spare money is the draw...that is not a put down....just face reality.

Broken Window Laws

Actually Gwinnett Co. has such a LAW.
It has mixed results.
But it does keep the community looking better by requiring all properties to fix broken windows quickly, or be fined and the county fix it for you at an added cost.

"sooner or later".........sounds like the George Patty-Wimpy theory of "pending explosive growth". "I'll gladly rezone your property and raise your tax valuations TODAY for possible hamburger joint and a drug store 13 years from now."

@seenitB4

I'm with you on that one... When I was in high school (the only time I was able to ride the bus...lived too close to school in earlier years) my bus only seemed to stop every 1/2 mile or so. Nowadays I've seen them stop twice in the span of a block to drop kids off, including in my neighborhood. What's up with that?

Nothing to comment on today. So I'll just say I'm on three medications that cause suicidal thoughts but none of them are working.

On the topic of school busses

... seems three, as the media styles them, youths beat a 13 year old, breaking his arm and blackening his eyes. The sheriff's department is looking into charges against the bus driver for not stopping the assault. Only later were the three identified and picked up.

Did I mention the three attackers were black and their victim white? No? Neither did the media.

And on the going to be kicked off the air

... and harried from the public weal front, we have a drunken sports host using the n-word and other racial slurs on camera. Boy, is he in for it! The whole broadcast world will be coming down on him in righteous anger; contracts canceled, death threats.

Not. He's black.
