One of the wettest summers in recent memory has reptiles stirring, particularly snakes.

In the newest installment of The Augusta Chronicle’s weekly video series, Augusta Outdoors, Savannah River Ecology Lab herpetologist Whit Gibbons will give us a primer on how to identify the most common snakes found in the our area.

In addition to sharing details on beneficial snakes that control mice and rats, the University of Georgia ecologist emeritus will show which venomous species residents might encounter and how to react if they encounter one.

Eastern King Snake

When I was a kid I had a 3 ft. King Snake that rode around with me on my bike inside of my shirt, sticking his head out of my sleeve to scare the daylights out of boys and girls alike. He was an escape artist and a couple of times he would sleep under the covers at the foot of my parents bed to be discovered at bedtime with their feet. So back to the woods for him. It was a great pet. Randy Lambeth

Fear of snakes is learned

Fear of snakes is learned from parents and those in a child's life. I stopped that in my family. Rather, my son did. He loved snakes and taught me a lot about them, so we passed that on to my husband and others in the family. None of my kids and grandkids are afraid of snakes. They have been taught to walk away from snakes if they see one outside, and they all are use to my pet snake Rambo.
