Wrens officer, pedestrian die in motorcycle crash

A Wrens police officer was one of two people killed in a Sunday night motorcycle accident in Hephzibah that sent a third person to the hospital.

A statement from the Wrens Police Department identified Officer Kyterian Jones, 26, as the driver of the motorcycle. Jones, who was off duty and celebrating his birthday, joined the department in February, the statement said.

Chief Deputy Coroner Mark Bowen said Jones lost control of his vehicle, veered off the road and struck two pedestrians and a parked car in the 2900 block of Ulm Road.

Jones and one of the pedestrians died at the scene. The other pedestrian was hospitalized, Richmond County sheriff’s Sgt. Monica Belser said.

Belser said the sheriff’s office doesn’t know whether excess speed was a factor.

The name of the deceased pedestrian is being held pending notification of next of kin.

Funeral arrangements for Jones are expected to be announced later this week.
