Rants & Raves

  • Follow Metro

THIS IS A RANT FOR THE person in Holiday Park who is stealing our newspaper. I called my carrier and she saw the girl who is stealing them. Please stop and we know who you are.

THANK YOU TO THE person at the McDonald’s on Walton Way who turned in my envelope with the cash in it. That was the last cash I had.

HOPEFULLY VARIOUS local charities will have their own red boxes that will be painted a different color so that the next time I put something in a box, I will know it is going to the right charity.

RANT FOR RICHMOND County Sheriff’s Department. You guys are doing a great job. I just wish you guys would clean up Second Avenue. The drug dealers are getting smarter and smarter while we are getting scareder and scareder. We need you to make a constant presence and they will leave.

I AM A TAXPAYING citizen of Aiken County and I agree with the editorial by Tina Bevington that we do not need to be burdened with the TIF to put a ball stadium in North Augusta. If North Augusta wants it, let they themselves pay for it.

A HUGE RAVE FOR Kevin Pollack and participants in the patriotic musical celebration at Warren Baptist Church. It was outstanding.

MAYBE IF THE commissioners had their vehicles taken away from them, they would realize that public transportation is needed for people who don’t have privately-owned vehicles.

RAVE TO DUANE, THE nurse at MCG. I appreciate what you did for my daughter. She was in pain and you explained to her everything that I could not. Be blessed.

I RECEIVED THE phone book. My number is not in there and my friend’s number is not in there. I wish they would put out one phone (book) with all names regardless of what carrier you have.

RAVE TO CAROLINA Pottery. They gave the first 100 people a 5 percent gift card, and the employees were wonderful.

THE PEOPLE WHO CALL numbers for the Georgia Lottery sound like they have a mouth full. You can’t understand a word they are saying.

RANT TO THE governor and everyone responsible for adding extra law enforcement during the holidays to look for DUIs. Those of you who chose to work in law enforcement deserve to work on holidays. You infringe upon my civil liberties.

The Black Community doesn't understand Justice!

Justice was served in the Zimmerman case in our current judicial system. Blacks don't need to march and protest that case, they need to look inward to see what they can do to prevent young blacks from killing each other.

"If North Augusta wants it,

"If North Augusta wants it, let they themselves pay for it."

So be it; but are you willing to forego the county portion of the tax income from the project?

Sweet son

That is the point people are over and over again are trying to make. A young man is dead, so I guess there is nothing "good" to be gained from his death; but the incident sure has provided an opportunity to talk about things that need talking about.

What Reverend Manning says in this video: http://tinyurl.com/k8pgfxs
is so true in many ways; people see what they want to see based on the color of skin. It cuts both ways but the issue comes when you are trying to fix problems. You see the defensiveness and refusal to accept what is a plain as the nose on their face right here in the comments section.

Because of that suspicion and defensiveness, the problems of lawlessness, excessive illegitimate birthrates, government dependency, etc.can only be solved from within the affected groups. I can't fix it, you can't fix it, and the government can't fix it (they are the problem to begin with).

10 Best Towns in GA for Young Families

Someone posted the link below yesterday to the 10 Best Towns in Georgia for Young Families. It was based on the criteria below. What’s interesting is that not only is Evans ranked number 1 in the state, but Martinez is separately ranked 8.

1. Does the town have good public schools? We measured academic performance with scores from GreatSchools. This non-profit organization compares a given school’s standardized test scores to the state average to obtain a rating on a 1 through 10 scale (10 being the highest score). Higher ratings led to a higher overall score.

2. Can you afford to live there? We looked at both average home prices in each town and ongoing monthly home costs, including mortgage payments, real estate taxes, insurance costs, utilities, fuel and other bills. Lower costs led to a higher overall score.

3. Is the town growing and prospering? We assessed a town’s economy by looking at average household income and income growth over the last decade. Higher income and greater growth led to a higher overall score.

1. Evans
2. Peachtree City
3. Sugar Hill
4. Perry
5. St. Simons
6. Suwanee
7. Alpharetta
8. Martinez
9. Buford
10. Fayetteville

What I see plain as day about the Zimmerman verdict is the opponents refusal to discuss the facts of the trial. We hear lots of misinformation and emotions from them, but no facts. From Harvard law professor, Alan Dershowitz, to local lawyers, they say there was no case against Z. Blacks, coming out of an era of segregation have good reasons to complain about their rights and economic hardships, but the Zimmerman-Martin incident was nothing but a sad event with no one legally responsible except the deceased.

Corgimom, we should thank Augusta

Corgimom, we should thank Augusta for helping make Evans number one. In good ways they provide jobs to help Evans have the high income. In other ways, not so good, Augusta caused the wealthier, better educated to help grow the population of Columbia County.

Suwanee & Alpharetta

Great towns to live in...I'm 2 miles from Suwanee....I can vouch for the beauty & gov of that area....
Another thought....married couples---family oriented neighborhoods with wholesome activities for kids..the town center of Suwanee has been in national magazines.

Do I profile

Yes I do & will continue...

If I see a strange car in the neighbors yard & they are at work I will call them at work & ask what is going on...

If I see strange kids hanging in the street I will try to find out what is up..

If I see kids going behind neighbors house I will check it out..

WE do this in this area....we call each other----we watch out for others...that is what the Police told us to do to cut back on crime..

Also, my neighbors say THANK YOU!
And I say THANK YOU to them.

When Hank Aaron got a call from his alarm company he called HIS neighbor to ck his house...that is what good neighbors do.

TIF

IAD asked if the Aiken Countians living outside North Augusta would be willing to forego the increased property taxes the new hotel would pay due to the increase in appraised valuation. The way I understand TIFs is that the increase in property taxes in a TIF stays inside the TIF and does not go toward the county general tax fund. So that's all the more reason for Aiken Countians outside North Augusta to oppose Project Jackson.

Ballpark

Let us not forget that the ballpark and the parking deck proposed for Project Jackson are to be owned by the government of North Augusta. Therefore, as government property, there will be no property tax revenue generated. Only the hotel is designed to make a profit.

How much property tax does Augusta get from GreenJackets Stadium? Zilch.

A typical comment from Calif resident

Scooter•a year ago −

I was born and raised in California. I moved out of California 6 years ago because I saw what was coming. The Liberals have totally screwed up a once beautiful state. And do they stay in the place they screwed up? No, they move next door. Look out Nevada before it's too late.

Riverman - City rankings?

I must have missed it...

Where on the list was Richmond Augusta Co.

I also noted they listed them as Augusta.
Will Columbia Co. Evans and Martinez demand a correction?

Bingo!

"Augusta caused the wealthier, better educated to help grow the population of Columbia County."

When we moved to Columbia County in '86, it was not prompted by a desire to live in Columbia County, but rather a desire to get the "H" out of Richmond County.

Does that include County Sales Tax? If that is the game they want to play, the entities within the TIF should either not collect sales taxes for the county, or should collect and turn them over to the TIF.

I'm afraid Augusta didn't make the top 10...heh. But the Augusta reference was to the "nearest big city." I think we all realize Augusta gives us the jobs to make Evans the highest household income on the list.

Home income ??

Look at the home value in Alpharetta & St Simons...I would think more are retired & very wealthy....compare with Evans anytime of the day....I have seen both & would say the wealth is in Alpharetta.

Median Household Income

Median household income of Evans--$95205, Alpharetta--92149, St. Simons--82949.

What's so sweet about that is homes cost less in Evans, also.

Investment Income

Some have to WORK & some live off their investments....they only take out what they need to live on for the year....we made more money each year when we worked...but we are wealthier now ..

True homes cost more but when they sell & move to "cheaper" places they have the EXTRA $$...

Many are invested in tax free income ..I'm sure you already know that....anyway that could change because that muni fund deal is going in the tank lately..
Another reason MANY should be concerned with bankrupt towns.

Surprise surprise..

AP National Writer
GULLANE, Scotland (AP) - Phil Mickelson has won the British Open with a spectacular finish.

Mickelson shot a 5-under 66 Sunday to match the best round of the tournament and win his first claret jug. The celebration began while there were still four groups on the course. Lefty birdied four of the last six holes, capped by a 10-footer at the tough 18th to claim his fifth major title.

As soon as the ball dropped in the cup, Mickelson pumped his fists in triumph, knowing it would be hard for anyone to chase down his 3-under 281 total. He headed off to hug his wife and kids while his caddie broke down in tears.

Lee Westwood started the day with a two-stroke lead but his chances ended when he failed to make eagle at the 17th. Adam Scott briefly held the outright lead on the back side, but four straight bogeys ended his hopes of a second major title.
