The body of an 81-year-old Williston fisherman was found early Thursday on the Edisto River.

According to Aiken Coroner Tim Carlton, John Champy Sr. had left his home Wednesday to go fishing and had not returned. A search was begun.

His body and the boat he was operating were found about 4 a.m., two miles upriver from the Veterans Road boat landing. The cause and manner of death are pending investigation by the Aiken County Coroner’s Office and the Department of Natural Resources.

An autopsy was scheduled in Newberry, Carlton said, but foul play was not suspected.
