Graniteville man's body pulled from Langley Pond

Authorities pulled a man’s body from Langley Pond on Friday.

He was identified as Byron Coleman, 22, of Graniteville. An autopsy is scheduled in Newberry, S.C.

Officials had been searching for Coleman since Wednesday afternoon, when he went missing while swimming with friends at the 250-acre pond. Burnettown Police Chief David Paul Smith said the Department of Natural Resources returned to the pond and found Coleman near the surface between 7:30 and 8 a.m. Friday.

Smith said Coleman met William C. Bailey Jr. and Bailey’s girlfriend at the park. The three decided to move to an area that is not set aside for swimming.

Authorities said Coleman told Bailey he was going to swim to a sand bar.

The men were within 30 feet of each other when they began to struggle in the water.

Two people nearby entered the water to assist but were able to reach only Bailey in time.

Bailey, 21, was taken to an Augusta hospital and was soon released. Police originally said Bailey was in critical condition, but Smith said he later learned authorities had been given bad information.
