The Georgia Council for the Arts has awarded nearly $1 million in grants to 66 organizations, including five in Augusta.

The grants are funded partially by the General Assembly and the National Endowment for the Arts and will be used for operating support or arts projects.

Locally, recipients include the Augusta Symphony, The Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art, the Rachel Longstreet Foundation, the Augusta Ballet, and Historic Augusta.

The art institute was one of nine organizations to receive support from the council for its arts education programs.
