Evans' Grace Baptist won't renew chapter

A local Baptist church has decided to part ways with the Boy Scouts of America, and other Baptist pastors say they no longer support the organization now that openly gay youth can participate.

Grace Baptist Church Pastor Bill Hilley said Troop 686 cannot meet at the Evans church after the end of the year.

Church and Scout leaders are looking for an alternative program that provides similar opportunities without compromising the safety and well-being of boys, he said.

“It’s really related to our convictions about God’s plan for his people,” Hilley said.

Hilley decided not to renew the church’s Scout chapter even before the Southern Baptist Convention issued a resolution June 12 opposing the national group’s new
membership policy. The Baptist convention said allowing gay youth is at odds with Biblical views on sexuality.

The Rev. Brad Whitt, the pastor of Abilene Baptist Church, said he supported the resolution. Whitt, whose church does not play host to a Scout troop, recommended that parents make a careful decision about their sons’ participation based on their religious beliefs.

“We want to reach everybody for Jesus. But we can’t condone a lifestyle that goes against our convictions and teachings,” Whitt said.

The Georgia-Carolina Council of the Boy Scouts of America works with eight Baptist churches in the 16-county region that includes Augusta, said Scout executive Jeff Schwab. The churches represent 12 Scouting units with 194 youth members.

Schwab said 85 percent of members in the Georgia-Carolina Council opposed the membership policy change. Twenty adult volunteers have resigned from their positions.

Clay Holland, the Scout master of Troop 686, said some troop members could risk losing the work done toward their Eagle Scout awards – the highest in Scouting. Some will finish the award by December, but others might be forced to earn an equivalent award in another program.

“My goal as a scoutmaster is to provide information to boys, parents and troop leaders about what their options are,” Holland said.

Leaders of other Christian denominations said their relationship with the Boy Scouts will go unchanged.

Pastor Greg Porterfield said Scouts can continue to meet at Wesley United Methodist Church in Evans. He said he had no right to intervene in an organization separate from the church.

“We have no power over it,” he said. “As an organization, Scouting has done a lot of great things.”

The Rev. Jerry Ragan, of St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church, said he followed the recommendation of Catholic bishops in allowing Scout troops to continue meeting at the church.

“The Catholic Church doesn’t find that they have to break completely with them, and I think that’s a good thing,” Ragan said. “The original purpose was to teach good virtues as young men, and I think they are still trying to do that.”

just read you bible

and you will know what Jesus said about being gay.it is a sin for man to lie with another man and the same for women .a gay person can change thier life and give it to God and sin no more and be forgiven for this sin but they can not just go to church and keep the same life style and be saved and forgiven and i agree with Grace Baptist they are going by the Bible and doing what God said is right. a lots of other churches need to go back to Gods word .churches have got so for away from Gods teachings so lets just all pray for all theses people who say they are gay i know some and i pray for them everyday God still answers prayers

Bod, let's put it this

Bod, let's put it this way.....what did God say about keeping yourself sexually moral? What did God say about His definition of marriage? As for your comment about Shrimp, maybe you need to do some studying up on the meaning of the Old and New Covenant, the resurrection of Christ, and the people of Israel....then you wouldn't speak (or type) hogwash.

If the church was allowing a

If the church was allowing a group of young married couples to meet at the church once a week or once a month and the church found out this was a gathering where couples could swap partners or join into threesomes, If the church was allowing a group to meet at the church once a month and they discovered this group was messing with voodoo or witchcraft, If the church was allowing a group to meet once a week at the church and discovered the group was hosting a gambling party where drinks and provocative women were dressed.....

How many would have an issue if the church stood by their biblical principals and discontinued allowing these groups to meet on God's holy grounds?

Let's be real with the

Let's be real with the analogies. There is nothing sexual about scouting. There are no sexual practices in scouting, at scout meetings, nor would any be allowed, condoned, or endorsed, whether they be homosexual or heterosexual. I applaud Greg Porterfield for enabling a group of young men, and their leaders, that want a place to meet to further scouting values. Scouting HAS NOT ENDORSED HOMOSEXUALITY. They merely changed their rules so that a boy, who realizes his sexual orientation is homosexual, does not have to be removed from scouting.

There is a lot of evidence that sexual orientation has a strong prenatal determinant, and there is no evidence that there is any practice or method by which sexual orientation can be changed post-natally. Gay people are born that way. Making support of scouts based on whether they allow people of different sexual orientations is bigotry and prejudice of the worst order. Scouting is not about sexual orientation, it is about your duty to God and your country, your duty to others, and your duty to yourself (in that order). Those are things most young men could use some training on.

And if you want to claim that the bible says you should be such a bigot, and you really believe that, then I will pray for your soul.

I think this is a good thing,

I think this is a good thing, children should not be exposed to this kind of bigotry and judgment and hypocrisy. This is not Christian behavior in any way.

"Let the little children come unto Me"- except if you are Grace Baptist Church.

Jesus said that, you know?

Sooo...

The church pulled its sponsorship because the Boy Scouts said they weren't going to tell gay kids they couldn't be in an organization that promotes core ethical values and teaches skills for the future to make them better men?
Isn't that like saying, sure you can come to our church and learn about God and we can teach you core principal values but you can't be a sinner? Jesus would love to know that all that time he spent hanging out with prostitutes and sinners trying to show them the way to salvation from leading by example translated so well through the ages.
Regardless of the fact that these kids are going to endure more pain and bullying because of their respective identity, so they will need the positive reinforcement and teachings and leadership skills they can garner through the scouts, the "church" doesn't agree that they should have a place to learn these skills because they are "sinners." I don't remember the BSOA saying they condoned homosexuality, they just said they weren't going to kick the kids out for being identifying as gay when they realize they are.
What a great lesson and example Christians are putting forth for the world. As long as you keep your blasphemy, alcoholism, vanity, pride, gluttony, etc. at home and out of site and away from us then we'll be glad to welcome you, but if you love someone whom has the same genitals as you then out the door you go, we shall shun you.

Let's try to think about something here that some are forgetting

or have never known. Scouts are at the age where they are learning about sexuality and their hormones are beginning to rage or are already raging.

To think a homosexual scout is not going to try to put moves on his tent mate when it's dark and they are out in the woods is simply shutting one's mind to reality.

Would these people who are all for homosexuals in scouts be willing to let their 14, 15, or 16 year old daughter who is becoming sexually aware of herself spend the night in a tent in the woods with a 14, 15, 16, 17, or 18 year old male who has raging hormones? Just as sure as God made little green apples sex is going to occur. The same will hold true with homosexuals and straight males.

overcome evil with good...

a paramount axiom of our Lord... a primer in what we are called to do. This ostracizing of 'children' for what ever notion one holds is nothing more than prejudice, period. Having been a scout master and dealing with an eclectic group of young boys, i can tell you that it was MY guidance, MY direction that they followed. You can address this issue in two ways... cower to your 'fear' or meet it head on with good group leaders, overcoming a precieved evil with good. Just where else do some of you think these tormented young men will find their way... by being shunned, a christian attitude not becoming of a member of the Father's Kingdom. Reminds me of the sanhedrin we studied in bible class this morning, a reluctant group, who only saw THEIR needs being attacked.

1000 % Support!!

Grace Baptist Church Pastor Bill Hilley said Troop 686 cannot meet at the Evans church after the end of the year. All organizations that live by the words of God should do the same.

Thank you WBC for educating me that homosexual has nothing to do with Sexuality.

I truly believe myfather has covered this whole topic as a Christian and with common sense. Those that don't accept his words are "NOT Christians"....Period.

All those that love and support the "gays" and believe that God accepts this type of life style, also believe that paying for or providing for sexual pleasures is not a sin.

So now you can all classify me and call me for what I am. I really don't care.

you make my point; cower in 'fear'... you see, I have a very good relationship with all 6 of my children, 3 boys, 3 girls. If by 14 years old in the times we live in I haven't had a direct conversation with them about sexuality, I am not doing them nor me any favors. It really comes down to dysfunctional sexual attitudes when children are left to their own devices in our sexually saturated world.

This issue is about

This issue is about homosexuals not being told that their lifestyle is sinful. Those living in sin don't want to be told they are living in sin and it is considered "hateful" to do so. Just as people living together are living in sin or a man who is cheating on his wife. Either homosexuality is sinful or is is not. If a Church believes any of the above are sinful acts they must call those in any of these lifestyles to repentance. The problem in the churches today is they want to fill the pews and not offend anyone. I attend a Church that still practices Church discipline which is rare today. Many churches will allow its members to remain in active, continuing sin without confronting the member and remain in good standing in the church.

You comment makes no sense. Either you believe certain behaviors are sinful or you don't. If you are a Christian you are to react to sin in a certain way and Churches are to handle sin in a certain way. Its all clearly spelled out in God's word which, obviously, you have no use for.

As a straight man living in

As a straight man living in modern times Im appalled at the hate some of you are spewing. What an antiquated and cowardly way to think. For all of you quoting scripture what about the words Jesus spoke about judgement? It is so easy to take words written over 2k years ago and manipulate them to fit your silly agenda. The truth of the matter is this affects none of you. The members of Grace Baptist Church will not show up to church on Sundays to find their church has been turned into a gay discotheque, or whatever it is they think gay people do in their spare time. All this is, is another form of discrimination. Stop being cowardly and hating for no reason other than your own ignorance. And stop with the absurd metaphors and quotes like "14 year olds are so raging with hormones they will def try and put the moves on my son in a tent alone!" First, off stop giving your kid so much credit for being attractive to gays. Secondly, how do you know your kid isn't the gay one? These comments are disgusting and ignorant. Move on folks and get on the right side of history. Maybe some of you could learn a thing or two from the scouts about acceptance.

It's a free country so all

It's a free country so all parties have the right to pursue their beliefs and ideology. No different than being a Dem or Rep. People don't always have to agree. The Church continues it's thang and the Scouts their thang. It's all about "choices", "diversity", and "freedom". Funny I hear both conservatives and progressives talk about all three when they have a pet peeve and cause yet it seems to the exclusion of the other when convenient. I guess some people have binary thinking and want to quell all three.
