The mayor’s assistant is leaving her position with the city for a new job at Georgia Regents University.
Karyn Nixon starts July 1 as a government and community specialist in GRU’s Office of Government Relations and Community Affairs. Her final day as Mayor Deke Copenhaver’s assistant is June 28.
“I’m working for the betterment of GRU at the local, state and federal level,” Nixon said Tuesday.
Nixon is not a new face to GRU. She served on the Enterprise Strategic Planning committee in 2010 when President Ricardo Azziz arrived to lead the Medical College of Georgia.
She was awarded one of the inaugural Community Advocate Awards in 2011 from the Medical College of Georgia at Georgia Regents University.
“The consolidation of the universities is probably the biggest game changer this city has seen, and it’s exciting to be a part of it,” she said.
Nixon started working with Copenhaver during his first campaign for mayor. He was elected in 2005 to fill the one-year unexpired term of Bob Young. He leaves office at the end of 2014.
“This has probably been one of the most difficult decisions. I love my job,” she said.
The mayor’s assistant position is posted on the city’s online job board.
