Car drives through crash scene; 7 hurt

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — A man has been charged with driving under the influence after authorities say he drove through a crash scene, sending seven people to the hospital.

Authorities say paramedics and firefighters were on the scene of a wreck early Saturday when the car drove through the scene.

The driver hit a firefighter, a paramedic and five others.

Felix Garcia-Romero, 26, is charged with three counts of felony DUI.

Head of state GOP takes job with RNC

COLUMBIA — The chairman of the South Carolina Republican Party has quit his post to take a job with the Republican National Committee.

Executive Director Alex Stroman said Chad Connelly submitted his resignation Saturday during a meeting of the party’s executive committee.

Connelly was re-elected in May to a second two-year term.

The Newberry businessman first was elected chairman in May 2011. Details on his new job were not immediately available.

State party leaders selected former GOP Exec­utive Director Matt Moore to take over as chairman. He left the party leadership earlier this year to serve as state director for U.S. Sen. Tim Scott.

Explosive turns up during cleanup day

LAURENS, S.C. — State police blew up an explosive device found Saturday during a volunteer cleanup day in Laurens County.

Sheriff Ricky Chastain said a volunteer found something wrapped in duct tape with the words “bomb test” on it. Explosive technicians from the State Law Enforcement Division were called in to examine the item and detonate it.

SLED officials planned to take the device to testing facilities in Columbia for further examination.

A SEARCH WAS called off Saturday morning for a surfer missing in choppy waters off North Myrtle Beach. The search for the 19-year-old man had involved boats, personal watercraft and helicopters. The teen went missing Friday afternoon after Tropical Storm Andrea moved through the area. A city spokesman said the surfer and his brother went into the water together, and the teen’s board later washed ashore.
