Rainy days forecast, storms possible for Augusta area

The tract of a low pressure system moving across the Gulf of Mexico will determine whether severe weather will hit the Augusta area.

The system is set now to cross south central Georgia on Friday with a 60 percent chance of showers Thursday and a 70 percent chance on Friday, according to Pam Tucker, the director of Columbia County Emergency and Operations Division.

But with uncertainty surrounding the tract, the forecast could change.

“At the very least we’re going to get increased chances for showers and thunderstorms,” said National Weather Service Meteorologist Bruce Cherry. “In general, there could be some locally heavy rain.”

If the low pressure system moves to the west there is an “enhanced chance for severe weather.”

Cherry said if severe weather does strike, it’s likely to hit Augusta late Thursday through about noon Friday.

Chances for rain continue throughout the weekend, but the chance for severe weather will diminish. Smaller thunderstorms are likely, Cherry said.
