THOMSON -- A head-on collision Friday afternoon along U.S. Highway 78 on the McDuffie-Wilkes County line backed up traffic for several miles, authorities said.

Two were injured and one was transferred to the trauma center at Georgia Regents Medical Center. Neither driver has been identified.

Sgt. 1st Class Paul Waller, of the Georgia State Patrol, said a North Augusta man was driving the red Dodge truck involved in the 2:40 p.m. collision. He was being taken to University Hospital in Augusta with non life-threatening injuries, Waller said.

The 21-year-old driver of a GMC Yukon from DeKalb County was taken to the trauma center by helicopter with more serious injuries, Waller said.

The Georgia State Patrol and McDuffie County Sheriff’’s Office continue to investigate.
