Through dental records and other evidence, Richmond County coroners on Thursday positively identified three charred bodies recovered last week as Roosevelt, Edna and Russell Jones of Hephzibah.

Roosevelt Jones, 65, and his wife Edna Jones, 64, were retired Richmond County educators. Russell Jones, 20, was a sophomore at Fort Valley State University majoring in health and physical education.

The announcement came two days after Ryan Jones was arraigned on three counts of murder in the slaying of his mother, father and brother.

Mark Bowen, the chief deputy at the Richmond County Coroner’s Office, said the causes of death remain under investigation and that the autopsy has yet to be completed.

However, early results from the examinations revealed each victim had been shot at least once in the head, then taken to a field near Deer Chase Elementary School and set on fire.

A memorial will be held for the Joneses at 11 a.m. Saturday at Good Shepherd Baptist Church. Pastor Roy Myles will officiate.

No surprise there

Unfortunately. Now if they could only tell us why.

My heart breaks a little piece each time more details are revealed. I can't imagine what it must do to the children and other family members.

I pray for their strength and well-being.

What kind of warped twisted mind

is even capable of an act this heinous?

And some still rail against the death penalty.
