The federal Environmental Protection Agency has awarded $200,000 to the Augusta Canal Authority to fund Sibley Mill environmental cleanup.

According to a news release, this phase of cleanup will involve removal of contaminated soil. The canal authority will negotiate a cooperative agreement with the EPA and begin work after authorization to proceed is received. The grant requires a 20 percent match in local funds, meaning a $40,000 local allocation will be leveraged into a $240,000 in project.

The canal authority, which purchased the 518,000-square-foot Sibley Mill in 2010, had made two unsuccessful applications for a share of the limited federal cleanup funds.

The mill and the adjacent King Mill property are under consideration for development as Georgia Regents University “Mills Campus” in a proposal put forward by the Augusta Regional Collaboration.

Wonderful news.... This

Wonderful news.... This project will be able to attract federal, private, and local public funds easily.

I can't stop getting excited over the Cultural/Mills campuses, and the cancer center.

I'm not sure saying I can't

I'm not sure saying I can't stop getting excited is the right phrase, but more money to help with the canal clean-up the work the volunteers have already done is a good thing. They have completed more than $200,000 worth.
