CONYERS, GA. — A baby and another passenger were killed when the child’s mother was racing another car and crashed on Interstate 20 east of Atlanta early Friday, the Georgia State Patrol said.
Kyrie Alassen Anderson, 22, was racing her Honda Accord near Conyers, about 25 miles east of Atlanta, and lost control of the car. The car hit a guardrail and traveled back across the westbound lanes of the highway before being hit by a Chevrolet pickup.
Officials say the woman’s 7-month-old baby and her 19-year-old boyfriend, Edi Rodriguez, of Covington, died in the crash.
The driver the woman was racing will be interviewed, Georgia State Patrol spokesman Gordy Wright, said.
Sunrise Banks’ 3 branches closed
VALDOSTA, GA. — The Georgia Department of Banking and Finance has shut down a Valdosta-based bank and transferred its assets to another one in based in Columbus.
Officials Friday said Sunrise Bank’s three branches have been closed and will reopen today as Synovus Bank branches. LaJuan Williams-Young, department spokesman, says customer accounts will automatically be transferred to Synovus Bank and customers are not expected to experience any disruptions in service.
Trial date is set
in slayings case
BRUNSWICK, GA. — A judge in coastal Georgia has set a September trial date for a Brunswick man charged with beating his father and seven others to death inside a mobile home nearly four years ago.
Glynn County Superior Court Judge Stephen Scarlett said in an order Thursday he plans to begin the trial of Guy Heinze Jr. on Sept. 23, The Brunswick News reported.
Heinze, 25, faces the death penalty if he’s convicted of murder in the Aug. 29, 2009, killings of his father, Guy Heinze Sr., and seven members of a family.
Man is charged in death of 2-year-old
MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. — A Mount Pleasant man has been arrested and charged with the death of a 2-year-old boy he was watching earlier this year.
Bryan Okeith Seabrook, 25, was arrested Thursday and charged with homicide by child abuse.
An investigation showed that the child died in a hospital March 19 of severe abdominal injuries as a result of blunt-force trauma, police Maj. Stan Gragg said.
Police did not release the names of the boy or his mother.
Police arrest man suspected in rapes
DULUTH, GA. — A man accused of raping at least five women inside a vacant apartment outside Atlanta is facing several charges.
Authorities say 23-year-old Joseph Tyler Sivonda was taken into custody Thursday by Gwinnett County police detectives, sheriff’s deputies and U.S. Marshals.
Gwinnett County police Cpl. Jake Smith said Sivonda faces rape, aggravated sodomy and armed robbery charges.
