An Augusta toddler was found dead Thursday after a Columbia County wreck that hospitalized her mother, but police refused to say Friday whether the child died as a result of the crash.

“It’s a pending investigation,” said Columbia County Sheriff’s Capt. Steve Morris, who acknowledged that investigators have received preliminary autopsy reports on 2-year-old Sky Allen. “No more details will be released at this time, because this is a pending death investigation.”

Sky was pronounced dead at the scene on Ray Owens Road in Appling on Thursday afternoon. Her mother, Marina Middlebrooks, 27, of Norton Boulevard, was airlifted to Georgia Regents Medical Center, where Morris said her condition was stable.

On Thursday evening, several police cars, a crime scene truck and an ambulance were at the Augusta home where Middlebrooks lived with her daughter, said neighbor Monte Fuller.

At one point, police searched a man and a boy who was about 5 years old, Fuller said.

Tim Allen, who identified himself as the brother of Middlebrooks’ fiance, said she lived in her fiance’s house with their two children, Sky and a boy 4 or 5 years old.

About 4:20 p.m. Thursday, the Honda CRV that Middlebrooks was driving north on Ray Owens Road drifted across oncoming traffic and ran off the road, Morris said.

The sport utility vehicle hit a tree, Morris said. No other vehicles were involved.

The toddler was not restrained in the front seat at the time of the wreck, Columbia County Coroner Vernon Collins said.

A child is dead. Two years

A child is dead. Two years old! Period. We want somebody to blame!

Perhaps blame will make us feel better about the senselessness of this loss.

I hope the mother did everything in her power to properly restrain this child, because if she didn't, she will be picked clean by the commentators on this site.

The family pictures seem to have been in the Chronicle's file.

Someone please explain to me

Someone please explain to me how you perceived my comment of "this will get interesting" to be negative and draw 4 thumbs down? Don't you think the facts presented about an investigation underway puts a lot of ??? around this that normally don't accompany a routine car crash?

Some of you are just nutty.

All the facts are not in. I

All the facts are not in. I don't know any of them. But if she was escaping someone, she may have put her daughter in the front seat to hurry up and get outta there. Let's see if there is more to this story and keep this family in sincere prayer.

Tragic

This is a tragic situation and my prayers will be with all concerned. It just strikes at our heart but this sounds like an avoidable accident and loss of a child. Therefore, the responsibility will fall back on the mother, IF we don't have further information to change it all.

The police might not be talking, but the headline says a lot. The autopsy has been done.

@HootsHoney

I stand by my words from the beginning regardless of your taunts. From the facts of the first story and the angle it was written in, it was an accident in which a two year old died. I still pray for the family and still want the mother held accountable is she is to blame. Additionally, your comment was not there when I left mine. I dont know if it was moderated then posted but it wasnt there and my original comment was not aimed as a witch-hunt or retort to you. Take it for what its worth and spare me your wittiness.

Horrifying situation

I just read the various places mentioned and if true, and I believe it is, it is a horrifying way for a baby girl to die. I think Augusta needs a free mental health clinic on every corner.

Ray Owens Road

You know people, the only real fact here is that the little girl is dead and that Ray Owens Road is very dangerous. it's curvy, narrow and so dark at night that it's spooky. Columbia County should really widen the road as it is heavily travelled by both pedestrians and cars.

Mark my words, there's going to be

a strange twist to this story when all the facts come in.

No, I don't know that, it's just a "gut" feeling.

I predicted above at 2:28 yesterday that

there would be "a strange twist to this story when all the facts come in."

I was right, but I'm sure not happy about it.

Who but God knows what little Sky might have done or become had she been allowed to live.

Heart breaking.
