Emergency workers help a woman who was hurt while crossing Reynolds Street.

A pedestrian who sprinted across Reynolds Street ran into the side of a vehicle and was injured Tuesday afternoon.

Richmond County sheriff’s Cpl. Brandon Reeves said Karen Bruker, 54, was taken to Georgia Regents Medical Center with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. She was listed in serious condition.

Bruker was at the corner of Ninth and Reynolds streets across from the Augusta Convention Center when she ran across Reynolds to beat oncoming cars as the traffic light on Reynolds turned green. She did not use the crosswalk, Reeves said.

Kylie Amos, 17, was driving west on Reynolds and apparently did not see Bruker in the road, Reeves said. Bruker, who told police she consumed alcohol before the accident, ran into the left front side of Amos’ Nissan Xterra, Reeves said.

Amos was not at fault in the incident and will not face charges, Reeves said. There are no charges pending against Bruker, but Reeves said the investigation is ongoing.

Stephen Santiago, 18, was driving west in the left lane next to Amos when the accident occurred. Santiago said he hit his brakes when he saw Bruker sprint across the road, but the setting sun in front of them could have blocked Amos’ view.

A 54 year old woman dashes

A 54 year old woman dashes across the street and hits the side of a vehicle driven legally by a 17 year old. Talk about role reversal.

Actually

That headline really bothers me. The female pedestrian ran into the truck.

Hope she has health

Hope she has health insurance. And if she damaged the truck, I hope she pays for that.

I really liked

the crisp clear pictureS showing the Convention Center and the intersection.

The "accident" the first in MANY Years on Reynolds St., was almost too good of a dream come true for those wanting a $Multimillion $Dollar $Pedestrian $Bridge installed.

OH! the problem is: The person who told police she had consumed alcohol in the afternoon, before the accident, and did not use the crosswalk.

Maybe she should reset her drinking clock to real time, instead of Jimmy Buffett time.

justification for the bridge. hallelujah hallelujah. something always happens to support the governments need for action. The ARC of No Covenant was right all the time. if the bridge saves one life it is worth millions.

A homemade bomb exploding necessitates the removal of black powder from the market place.

Common sense

There is no pedestrian bridge needed for pete's sake.
#1. Alcohol played probably the biggest part here
#2. Trying to beat traffic rarely ends up well
#3. When I was a kid, I was taught to STOP, LOOK TWICE, LISTEN.
I would think "grownups" will be the main traffic in this area, so...
what's the problem???

Puzzle

From the story:

Bruker was at the corner of Eighth and Reynolds streets across from the Augusta Convention Center when she ran across Reynolds to beat oncoming cars as the traffic light on Reynolds turned green. She did not use the crosswalk, Reeves said.

Excuse me, but I believe the convention center (aka TEE Center) is at Ninth and Reynolds. Am I wrong?

Also, the story says she was at the corner, but didn't use the crosswalk. That is truly bizarre. I know it's tempting to jaywalk when you are in the middle of a block; but why would one go out of one's way to jaywalk from a corner when there is a crosswalk right there?

I guess it's fitting that I get my twenty-thousandth point while commenting on a story about jaywalking, since I've commented on so many stories on this subject over the years. The story says police have not yet charged Ms. Bruker. That's probably because they want to be accurate in their charges. Was she truly jaywalking (i.e., crossing not at an intersection or marked crosswalk)? Or, instead, was she crossing at the intersection but against the traffic signal? Police need to get it right, or the defendant could walk on a technicality.

Thanks. My wife and I drove past just after it happened. iPhones come in handy in journalism these days.

Pedestrian Bridge

Even with a pedestrian bridge, a drinking jay-walker most likely wouldn't have used it, & just raced across the street like this woman did.
Was her blood alcohol level checked?
If she was above .08, then what are the ramifications for jay-walkers?

Bridge

Paul Simon's Dream Bridge was not planned to serve the walking public. Rather it was to get motorists from the parking deck into the Marriott Building via the TEE Center second floor.

Things happen.

This woman is one of the loveliest, most caring and supportive women i have ever met. Sometimes things don't happen as we think they will. I'd like to hear all of you former commenters say with total honesty that you have never in your life had something that didn't work out exactly as you had planned. If you can honestly say that, then say what you will. But just know that this woman is wonderful, and she has an amazing family, and some of the things you are saying are hurtful. Think about how you say something and how it might affect others before you type it for the world to see. Love you and am thinking of you Bruker family. <3

Karen is a dear friend of mine, and - as TesslaCoil1123 notes above - I am one of a million gajillion in our community. I understand the impulse to post a comment that seems at the moment to be clever. I have done it. But, isn't there a difference between remarking on a ego-driven quirk of a commissioner and an unfortunate accident that did bodily harm to a fellow citizen? Karen underwent surgery yesterday to repair her broken pelvis. She is one of our city's greatest assets. Please lift her up in your prayers. There are many of us who shudder to consider life here without her warmth and kindness.
