In commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, Georgia Regents University is offering a driving tour of Civil War sites and monuments around Augusta on Saturday.

The tour will begin at 2 p.m. at Fanning Hall on GRU’s Summerville campus. The campus was the site of the Augusta Arsenal from 1829 to 1955 and is where large quantities of war supplies were produced during the war.

Dr. Thomas H. Brown, a writer and historian at the University of South Carolina, and Debra Van Tuyll, a professor at GRU, will offer interpretive comments along the tour.

Guests will receive a pamphlet that includes background information for each stop along the way. Included are Magnolia Cemetery, Old Richmond Academy, the Four Poets Monument in the 700 block of Greene Street and the Confederate Powderworks.

Additional sites of interest not included in the tour are in the brochure so guests to explore on their own, said GRU’s special collections librarian, Carol Waggoner-Angleton.

The tour is the culmination of Augusta’s Viewpoints: Understanding the Civil War, a series of book lectures exploring Augustans’ experiences during the war.

The tour is free. Reservations are requested to ensure enough printed materials are available and can be made by calling (706) 667-4904 or (706) 667-4912.
