Sunny skies expected for Skynyrd concert

The Columbia County Championship Festival closes out a full Masters Week of events in Evans with a concert Friday from Southern rockers Lynyrd Skynyrd.

The weather is expected to cooperate.

Outdoor events on Thursday went off without a hitch despite threatening skies all afternoon and a storm front that spawned tornadoes and downed trees in its path as it moved across the Southeast. The front mostly skirted the Augusta area, however, with scattered showers falling during the night.

The National Weather Service station in Columbia forecasts a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms Friday, with gradual clearing after 10 a.m. and winds from 9 to 13 mph. After the front clears, the afternoon is expected to be mostly sunny with a high near 77 degrees.

Gates at Evans Towne Center Park are set to open at 6 p.m. for the concert by Lynyrd Skynyrd at the Lady Antebellum Pavilion. Drake White opens at 7 p.m., and Lynyrd Skynyrd is scheduled to take the stage at 8:30 p.m.
