Rants & Raves

Comments from readers:

I AM SICK AND TIRED of conspiracy theorists on the Internet who are constantly denigrating the fine, upstanding civic leaders of Augusta and calling them members of some shadowy cabal. These people have been watching too many Oliver Stone movies and need to get a life.

WE NEED A SPECIAL ASU History Day. Let’s make it during that alumni weekend in April, say that Friday. That will really draw attention to the history of ASU and GRU while appealing to the alumni of both universities.

WEIGHT GAIN? Yes, we are doing less strenuous work now than the days of our parents or even grandparents. People seem to like to spend way too much time sitting down to beep on their phone devices or to move switches on consoles or computer keyboards. People now can even have others do their food shopping and preparation all the time if they wish to pay for that. Such a shame.

THE CHILDREN’S Hospital of Georgia is so management-heavy that they do not have the staff nurses for patient care.

REPUBLICANS PROPOSE cutting spending to reduce the debt and balance the budget. Democrats propose adding taxes. Why not use the media (Internet, newspaper, etc.) to present a comparison in plain English of all proposals and let the American taxpayers/voter decide?

RANTS TO THE PERSON or persons who stole the gate from the cemetery at Marvin United Methodist Church. Did you really need it that badly? You had to stoop mighty low to do something like this. I have family members buried at this cemetery. Maybe someone will notice that you have a new gate up which does not look totally new in appearance and will notify authorities. If you have a conscience, it should be bothering you.

COMMISSIONER ALVIN Mason’s statement that he will divide the county spending into two categories by making a list of the items we must have – “needs” – versus a list of items we don’t need – “wants.” All of our commissioners must join him by making their own lists so that the items we do not need get removed from future spending. Mason is being proactive and must be commended.

SHERIFF ROUNDTREE, since you got your raise, how about your deputies? Fair is fair. They deserve a raise.

The Watermark development is

The Watermark development is very old(announced in 2005/2006 & cancelled in 2009), and was never mentioned alongside of the TEE Center(didn't break ground until June 2010).

Do you make this stuff up on purpose? The only hotel connected to the TEE Center is the proposed Hyatt Place. I think you already knew this, and only trying to reach for straws because you got the Watermark/old jail properties mixed up earlier.

According to the latest Augusta Chronicle article. The developer is still pushing for the Hyatt Place.

Countyman, I didn't mean to

Countyman, I didn't mean to hurt your feelings. You are actually right, it's kind of hard to keep all the cancelled hotels straight when Margaret Woodard is making statements like below while talking about the TEE

"Downtown Development Authority Executive Director Margaret Woodard said a project of the Watermark's magnitude is bound to run into challenges and delays, which is why she doesn't like putting time frames on things.

"Harry Kitchen is not nervous," Ms. Woodard said. "He's just being a smart businessman and developer."

Downtown revitalization continues, she said. The trade, exhibition and event (TEE) center is moving forward, as are a new hotel on the old jail site and The White's Building project. Last week, she said, she showed properties to developers interesting in turning more old buildings into lofts and store space.

"Our phones are ringing off the hooks, and there are so many projects coming out of the ground soon," she said. "There's a lot of interest in Augusta."

white squirrel in Augusta - does Ft. Gordon count?

The OLD (60-70's) Ft. Gordon Museum had a stuffed one on display back in 1968.

It was found on a Back side range. But it was an Albino white squirrel .

Surprisingly they are not that rare.

When we moved to our house in

When we moved to our house in 1974, there were several white squirrels who lived a couple of blocks from us. Haven't seen one in years. Squirrels fascinate me. One day we were having a thunderstorm. Our lot slopes to the rear, so our kitchen windows are on tree branch level. There was a squirrel balled up totally round on a branch, sleeping thorough the storm.

"Has anyone EVER seen a white squirrel in Augusta?"

You mean ACTUALLY "seen," or "seen" like on these boards?

Squirrels...

Fuzzy tailed, destructive rats. I send them to squirrel heaven every opportunity I get, and don't apologize for it beyond killing them out of season.

NocNoc, great info and links. I did know that Brevard, NC has a White Squirrel festival. That's where your links are from. Interesting.
