Vogtle to get visit from veteran NRC member

A visit to Plant Vogtle this week by Nuclear Regulatory Commission Chairwoman Allison Macfarlane was canceled because of illness, but veteran NRC member William Ostendorff will tour the project’s construction site instead.

Plant Vogtle has two reactors and is the site of a $14 billion expansion to add two more units – the first such construction authorized in the U.S. in decades. A second nuclear project is under way in South Carolina.

The Vogtle project received a license from the NRC last year for building and operating the new Westinghouse AP1000 units.

Ostendorff joined the NRC in 2010 after a career that included roles with the National Academies, National Nuclear Security Administration and as a counsel and staff member of the House Armed Services Committee.

U.S. Rep. John Barrow, whose 12th District includes Burke County, will accompany Ostendorff on the tour Tuesday.
