The dedication ceremony for renaming a section of 15th Street to Ruth B. Crawford Highway will be moved indoors Saturday in case of inclement weather.
The ceremony will now take place at 11 a.m. inside the Gandy-Richardson Lecture Hall, which is on the second floor of Haygood Holsey Hall at Paine College.
The section of 15th Street between Laney Walker and Martin Luther King boulevards will be renamed Ruth B. Crawford Highway. The renaming was spurred by a House resolution proposed by Rep. Wayne Howard in the Georgia General Assembly.
A 1939 graduate of Paine College, Crawford worked as a teacher with the Richmond County Board of Education for 38 years.
She retired in 1977 and founded the Shiloh Comprehensive Community Center, where she assisted the elderly, provided food and shelter for the needy and helped educate youth. She is also known for working with the court system to rehabilitate first-time offenders.
She continues to contribute financially to Paine while participating in various educational and civic organizations.
