SERIOUSLY. HOW DEEP do the many potholes on Wrightsboro Road have to be before they repave it? I have been here more than 20 years now, and I don’t think that road has been repaved in that length of time and it is badly, badly in need of it.

WHO OWNS THE Cadillac Escalade with the city decal and who gets to drive it?

RAVE TO SYLVIA COOPER. Keep up the good work. Now all we need is for the higher-ups (FBI or whoever) to come to Richmond County and clean house. This county is so crooked, and it needs to be investigated.

RANT TO THE EDITORIAL staff about the Oscars. Why did you even bother to watch? Or, is this some more of your “second-hand” editorializing as dictated by Fox?

WHAT WOULD YOU want them to do with Mr. Gorrell? It will not bring your loved one back. This man is 80-plus years old.

IT’S SAD THAT Richmond County will be losing some excellent veteran teachers because they are unwilling to restructure the system. Teachers who have spent thousands of dollars on higher degrees are not getting paid because of the nine furlough days. Many are searching for adjoining counties which have no furlough days. Does anyone care? You can start by removing instructional coaches from elementary schools. They do not even work with students. A waste of money.

I JUST WANT TO LET everyone know what a wonderful job our young children did in the All County Chorus Concert that took place in Sacred Heart Cultural Center. They were awesome. Thank you so much to all of their hard work along with the music teachers and Mr. Neches.

SHAME ON THE Georgia Department of Agriculture for revoking the license of the Happy Tails Rescue animal rescue group. Apparently, the agriculture inspectors nitpicked the place to death. Maybe the sequester will result in fewer inspectors available for such work in the future.

A $26,000 PAY RAISE and all it takes is writing a letter? I can do that in a heartbeat.

IT IS STUPID NOT TO allow people to grow tobacco here in the United States. How do they expect people to get tobacco products? They are expensive enough as it is. I wish they would leave people alone about what to buy and not to buy and what to eat and what not to eat.

Mr Gorrell

I would expect this individual to be sitting in a cell, under confinement, like the rest of the alleged murderers have to do. Are we now going to start a precedence stating that it is OK to murder someone and if you are elderly or otherwise incapacitated, then you can somehow live in the confinement of your choice? Dude is old enough to know the consequences of his actions so he should pay the penalty and live in whatever facilities the authorities have to offer.

Last rant

We currently live in a nation that likes to let folks know what the effects of the products they consume will have on their health.
I think anything that you can grow in your yard should be legal, be it weed, tobacco, poppy or okra.
My family in south Georgia was in the "backer" farming business for many years and was producing the dreaded tobacco plant. I actually helped in this for a couple of years when I was younger by stripping the leaves, tying them to the wooden rods and hanging them in the curing barn. After they cured we would take the 'backer from the rods and lay them in big burlap bundles for transport to the warehouse in Blackshear (Pierce County) for auction.
What I liked about this was that all of my local family and their friends would come out and help with every aspect of the production from planting, harvesting and curing. It was a great way to be around your family.

Backer

I never participated in this, being a "city boy." But I have talked to two or three backer farmer's kids (one a petite female from around here in Augusta) who helped out their families. Thank you for putting this into perspective, Jake. Readers of this R&R column may want to go and read yesterday's Glynn Moore column where he writes about his childhood experience of splitting firewood in the snow and getting his photo snapped - - - - leading to a lifetime of wondering. It's a great column.

Wrightsboro road

#1. The section of Wrightsboro rd near Midtown, Trinity Hospital, etc was repaved in the year 2011. I think the new Walmart might cause some minor roadwork, but the stretch between Highland Ave/Augusta mall desperately needs help. The part of the road between I-520/Jimmie Dyess and near the Wrightsboro rd/I-520 interchange/Augusta mall is under construction. The widening of Marks Church rd and resurfacing of Highland Ave/Jackson/North Leg should also help improve the situation. Hopefully the new GRU or a private developer can buy Georgian Place or Fox Den to create student housing. The city of Augusta has too much underused property. Anybody driving on Wrightsboro once you past Barton Chapel can see people are turning onto Belair rd. All of the new homes on Belair rd, Jimmie Dyess, and Gordon Hwy(between Jimmie Dyess/Grovetown). Still no elementary school(crowded Sue Reynolds) or middle school in the area(Southwest Augusta).

Growth in South Augusta & local county added to metro Augusta!

The Walmart in South Augusta on Deans Bridge rd will undergo a major remodeling project. The renovation of the Walmart located in Evans is underway right now. The new Walmart in West Augusta near the mall begins construction very soon.

I reported yesterday Walgreens is building a 13,000 SQ. FT. store at the intersection of Tobacco/Windsor Spring in South Augusta.
http://appweb.augustaga.gov/planning_zoning/plazid_display.asp?zID=4453

Preliminary reports are showing Lincoln County(around 8k) is now apart of both the metro and CSRA. The Augusta MSA includes Richmond, Aiken, Columbia, Burke, Mcduffie, Edgefield, & Lincoln counties.

By the Numbers

#1. They are too busy every year redoing the roadsways leading to Augusta Nations.

#2. the taxpayers paid for it 1 way or the other, we just don't get to drive it.

#3. Ditto

#4. To the poster. - GET A LIFE, FOX isn't a demon, just factual version of THE VIEW. Facts really bother some people who like spoon feeding. Besides who cares what some Hollywood Bimbo or Liberal Actor thinks, I just want then to act on the screen not on the streets for the extra media exposure.

#5. The Augusta Medical prison facility sounds appropriate as a start.

#6. Teachers are getting screwed on pay, while taxpayers are getting screwed on the In The door Salary increases. Go Figure?

#7. Post a Youtube Video and Link. I'd like to see and hear them.

#8. GA-DOA - is a Bureaucracy in decline. It needs headlines once a year to justify its growing budget, with a declining mission.

#9. Write it but who will read it or touch it after the last go around. That backdoor is now closed.

#10. It is about the Taxes. BTW: Where is all that $$$ going that was to set aside for Lung and Smoking related medical conditions.

Sugarcane & watermelon fields in South Carolina

Jake ya brought back some sweet memories to me ......

Some of my best summers were spent with my cousin Bobbie Jean in Varnville S C.....we would ride the ole wagon picking up watermelons & also sometimes sugarcane......ooh the good ole days....her older brother had an old car with a rumble seat in it....he would drive us across the old wooden bridges on some dirt roads & we would reallly rumble in that thing....haha...Aunt Nettie would call us at the top of her breath....hollaring Booooobbbieee Jeeeeannn.....the whole dang woods could hear her long drawl....but we would hide out ...cause we knew she had some shelling peas & butterbeans in mind for us...heheh

I wish I could relive some of those days ...going to the Watermelon Festival.....going to the ole country store....reminds me of Mayberry type living....they all knew each other in the town....they lived off the land......nothing fancy ....you had to make your own entertainment & BOY we sure did that.....can't tell that though!!

Duck Dynasty

I think the reason I like the Ducks so much is because I have kin like that......hunt---fish-- have made moonshine in years past....& served time for doing it too...lomg tables with lots of home grown veggies & meat.....
My Uncle Walter was the best at hauling shine....down Hy 1 & Peach Orchard Rd.....he had a grocery store out on Hy 1....sweetson might know that store....the moonshine came from Morgan Rd area.....back then it was country..

"Cadillac Escalade with the

"Cadillac Escalade with the city decal and who gets to drive it?"

Oh I'd say some pompous, self-important local official who's bloated ego could not be satisified with the exact same vehicle with a Chevy Tahoe emblem on it for less cost to the taxpayer. Of course that description fits a lot of our local officials. Scratch that.....MOST of our local officials. Vehicles for public officials should be base model vehicles from a fleet buy and the Procurement Office should be required to get the best deal from an American maker on their BASE model. If we need 20 six passerger SUVs they should all be base models. Taxpayers should not have to endure pompous ego maniacs saying "I want an Escalade" or "I want a loaded up Tahoe". It ain't like our officals spend much time riding around town on official business. All they need is something to transport their useless butts from point A to point B.

hahah to this rant

I wish they would leave people alone about what to buy and not to buy and what to eat and what not to eat.

They will NEVER leave us alone.....just this week my neighbor had a note from the HOA telling her to get rid of her broadleaf weeds in her front yard....she refuses to use poison because of her dogs....she said it killed one of her dogs.....it doesn't look bad to me .....when the summer comes it will blend in more anyway.....geez .....we have too many dang rules right now......
My daddy would never last in a HOA community....not with his old trucks...pigs & equipment all around...the world has chnaged & sometimes it stinks.

Great posts noc noc & Llamb

Shift

I have consistently panned countyman's pleas for city government to "do something" with the "Regency Mall property." I remind him that property is private and the city has nothing to do with it other than collect taxes. But nocnoc's idea is intriguing for me.

If city government would make an ironclad pact with taxpayers to:

1. Begin purchase proceedings for the Regency Mall site to become the new City Hall, and

2. Place the Greene Street Marble Palace on the market to be sold to a non-governmental entity, then

we might be on the road to some sort of reconciliation between the downtowners and the southsiders.

With city hall at Gordon & Deans Bridge we move toward centralization. The sheriff's administration and the Ruff House cover the northeast sector. The sheriff's substation at Daniel Village covers the Hill Section, while the sheriff's substation on Hwy. 56 covers the southeast sector. The utilities maintenance building on Wylds Rd. covers the west.

Sounds like a plan.

JTF...

Okay, sorry....I thought you were from ARC.

I heard Behar was leaving too, but also that Hasselbeck was being replaced because she's too "right-wing extreme" for "The View" watchers.

Lindsey Graham would make an excellent replacement for Hasselbeck, IMHO.

Another reason to carry

Man Stops Grizzly Attack With 25 Cal Pistol.

This is a story of self control and marksmanship with an itsy bitsy .25 calibre pistol by a man against a fierce predator. What is the smallest caliber you trust to protect yourself?

The Beretta .25 Jetfire

While out hiking in Alberta Canada with my wife we were surprised by a huge grizzly bear charging at us from out of no where. She must have been protecting her cubs because she was extremely aggressive.

If I had not had my little .25 Beretta Jetfire with me I would not be here today! Just one shot to my wife’s knee cap was all it took……. the bear got her and I was able to escape by just walking away at a brisk pace.

It's one of the best pistols in my collection…….
