DOE shares SRS budget cut projections with Gov. Haley

Sequestration cuts could force Savannah River Site contractors to furlough or lay off as many as 2,180 workers, according to new U.S. Energy Department projections shared Tuesday with South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley.

“As a result of sequestration, the department’s overall budget has been reduced by $1.9 billion for the remainder of the fiscal year,” Deputy Energy Secretary Daniel B. Poneman said, in a letter to Haley.

Those impacts, based on a preliminary analysis, translate to $107 million in direct reductions for the department’s contractors in South Carolina, he said.

“As a result of this decrease in funding, we understand that contractors may be forced to furlough or lay off more than 2,180 employees in South Carolina as early as April 1, 2013,” the letter said.

Although the estimates prepared at department headquarters involved furloughs and layoffs, the site’s primary contractor – Savannah River Nuclear Solutions – announced earlier this week it intends to reduce work schedules for 2,000 employees to mitigate the impact of the cuts. The schedule cuts would place affected workers on 32-hour work weeks, beginning April 1.

Savannah River Site’s total workforce is about 11,400, which includes federal employees and contractors, along with National Nuclear Security Administration operations that include the Mixed Oxide Fuel Facility, or MOX project, and the site’s tritium program, which supports the nation’s nuclear weapons arsenal.

Until more is known, it remains unclear exactly how contractors will be affected by the broad cuts, site spokesman Bill Taylor said.

“I don’t think we as a site have narrowed everything down to the specifics,” he said. “Everyone is still examining where best to balance our missions with people’s needs and still protect the workforce.”

Why isn't the Augusta

Why isn't the Augusta Chronicle reporting on how this will affect the other contractor (SRR)? Also, my gut tells me that before the end of this month, some kind of deal will be made, resulting in zero layoffs and furloughs.

Numbers Don't Add Up

Again, sequestration is supposed to reduce all federal budgets by around 2.5%. How can that possibly lead to such drastic cuts in Federal agencies in the Augusta area? And it is supposed to be across the board. So why are some agencies exempt and some are hit hard?

I can't help thinking politicians are gaming the system to make a point.

Why aren't we hearing about

Why aren't we hearing about across the boards cuts, like salaries of the government employees at SRS?

With Obama, it is we cut firemen, policemen, air traffic controllers, meat inspectors, defense. Why no word on him flying his beloved barber into Washington from Chicago every time he needs a haircut?

Robaroo reply

Robaroo. That 2.5% number is the entire budget, most of which was not hit like social security and Medicare, veterans, etc. So that miniscule 2.5% becomes about 7.5% for domestic programs. SRS has been working under continuing resolution, which means its funding has been cut 15% already. They laid off 20% of the work force to make up for that, but woefully missed the mark and is still short, even before these cuts. Now with these cuts they are apparently attempting to add in their own shortfall with the sequest. cuts. SRR has less money issues for a number of reasons. As of yet, they haven't made an announcement.

When you add those 2 numbers together and you have a facility operating at 22.5% under funded.

How about fewer campaign

How about fewer campaign trips on Airforce One, Marine One and the rest of his trips? If he really cared, would he have flown with entourage to Palm Beach while Mooch took daughters skiing with that entourage? Right soon after his doubled up trips for vacationin Hawaii? He represents the epitome of the rich people he is trying to demonize for the sake of the Democratic party advances and more.

I am well aware he cannot run again. But he can declare marshal
law after a "manmade disaster," which could be a result of his lawmaking via executive orders.

You can't punish a region by cutting off tax dollars unless that region is already living off the taxpayer teat. Perhaps this will act as a wake-up call for the CSRA to start practicing what it preaches.

when

When will the DOE employees feel the pain? If they really wanted to save money they should look in the mirror and lay off about half of the federal employees. It's do as I say not as I do all the way to the top.

KSL, This president never

KSL,
This president never stops campaigning. The main item on his plate now is to have democrats win back the House of Representatives in 2014 so he can implement the rest of his liberal agenda. If you don't believe that he's taking campaign trips, you need to pull your head out of the sand.

DIXIEMAN HAS 2 BILLION POINTS

OK, first let's cut:
1. Sensitivity training, diversity seminars, off-site conferences and meetings, and outside consultants re the above. That will save 2.5% right there and leave the mission intact.
2. Not enough? Do a performance review and fire the bottom 2.5% of employees as rated.
This whole sequestration implementation is political to the extreme - lay off the firemen, police, close the National Parks first, etc. to make the public wince - and could be done in many other ways.

Those NOT Affected...

The most disturbing thing is that the entitlement and welfare programs aren't affected at all.

So all of you in the entitlement society, keep doing what you're doing. You'll be fine.

But the rest of us who take our responsibilities seriously and work hard to provide for our families, we're screwed.

EDawgnSC69 you are 100% right

EDawgnSC69 you are 100% right on your point. I want to hear about and actually see cuts to all the freebee things out there. I get really tired of going to Wal-Mart and seeing these people load up their carts with steaks and snacks while I get 1/4 of a cart and pay my $150.00.
And they are so good at swiping that peach card without being noticed. These people need to be cut off or reduced immediately!
Politicians will not talk about this because they know thihs is exactly what gets them elected again and again!

The CSRA's economy is heavily subsidized by federal tax dollars.

Which is ironic considering how red the area is. You wanted less government spending? Well, here it comes.

And the poster above nailed it: The President can't selectively punish a region unless that region is using federal tax dollars (and only to that extent).

Any proponent of slashing the federal budget has no basis to complain if their or their loved one's/friend's livelihoods are negatively impacted by cuts. Remember: this is what you have always said you wanted.

You don't see me complaining either. Cuts HAVE to be made. Obama WANTS the cuts to hurt so he can blame Republicans. Why else would he refuse the Republican's offer to give him discretion in WHERE cuts are made? Sequestration was OBAMA'S idea and signed into law by OBAMA. The Democrats refused to pass TWO alternatives that the House passed....yet they STILL blame Republicans......and Obama's acolytes follow in lock step.
