A Martinez woman who was killed early Saturday in a crash on Interstate 20 near Grovetown has been identified.

Alaina Kensinger, 28, died at Georgia Regents Medical Center at 9:11 a.m., said Columbia County Deputy Coroner Harriett Garrison.

Kensinger was riding in a 2008 Nissan Sentra driven by Christopher Sanmiguel, 27, of Evans, said Columbia County sheriff’s Capt. Steve Morris.

Sanmiguel was driving east on I-20 near a weigh station at about 4:30 a.m. when he is believed to have fallen asleep, Morris said. The vehicle drifted off the right side of the road, turned sideways and struck a guard rail before hitting a metal sign pole, Morris said.

Sanmiguel was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening, Garrison said.

Witnesses said Sanmiguel’s vehicle was traveling at high speed before the crash, Garrison said, and both he and Kensinger were wearing seat belts.

Kensinger’s body was taken to the GBI Crime Lab in Augusta for an autopsy, Garrison said. Blood-alcohol test results for Sanmiguel are pending, Morris said.

My thoughts and prayers are with Alaina's family and friends, and with Chris, who's like a brother to me. Such a devastating occurrence.
