Rants & Raves

  • Follow Metro

Comments from readers:

IT’S ABOUT DARK, and I am riding my bicycle on the Greeneway. I see a runner ahead. She has an LED built in to her jacket, and reflective stripes. I am thinking; “Wow, this runner really practices safety.” Then I have to veer around her, because, contrary to path etiquette and common practice, she’s running on the left side.

RANT FOR LIBERAL judges. Now we know why there are so much crime and violence in America. A 19-year-old kid is shot to death. The witnesses lie through their teeth, withholding information, interfere with investigations and all they get is probation. The shooter gets off with five years. Didn’t somebody tell you a man died?

KUDOS FOR THE teacher who spends her weekend in the clubs getting drunk. How can you possibly be a positive role model when you can’t even make responsible decisions for yourself?

PLEASE BE A GOOD neighbor and keep your cat on your property. If that is impossible, keep it in your house.

CONTRARY TO POPULAR belief, most state employees aren’t overpaid pencil-pushers but are your neighbors who work for less money and higher insurance costs than their private business counterparts. The often-overlooked health care workers, such as in our mental health services, give the best care that they can for your families despite low wages and no raises in many years. Let’s give them the same support that we are giving our educators.

WHY DO YOU FIND it so hard to keep the online Rants & Raves updated?

RANT TO THE person who said he was in the military for 25 years and sees no need for civilians to own an assault weapon. If this person really spent 25 years in the military, he would know that the weapons that civilians buy are not military assault weapons. It is like comparing squirt guns to garden hoses. No army in the world uses what the uninformed, the president and media call assault weapons.

THREE THOUSAND killed on 9/11. Our response? Trillions and two wars. But 270,000 gun deaths in America since then. Our response? “It’s my right.”

RANT TO BRENDAN Douglas for not understanding the meaning of the word “commitment.” His last-minute switch from Georgia Tech to UGA shows a lack of class and common sense.

It's Like One and One Equals Two

The problem with minimum wage is that it makes the ditches cost more to dig and the peaches cost more. If wages go up, prices go up. The best argument for the minimum wage is that it at least temporarily helps lower income workers. But even that admits the inflationary trend with the increased wage will eventually prevail. There is no getting around economic laws of supply and demand. People should be paid what they are willing to work for.

Ever watch that show on TV about the oil rig workers? Or the Alaskan king crab fishermen? Those workers make lots, but they earn every bit of it. They are in demand because they work hard in dangerous settings. They wouldn’t do it for minimum wage. Supply and demand.

What Happens If Minimum Wage is LOWERED?

Drum roll.............prices go down and the worker making minimum wage spends less for needed products.

Do you think the workers at Georgia Power or Jefferson Energy make the minimum wage? Minimum wage has been reserved for the individuals working at restaurants, convenience stores, clerks at most hotels, gas stations and maybe some grocery stores. The cost of fuel and electricity will rise even if there is no increase in the minimum wage.

Unpublished

Some of the workers a GA power DO make minimum wage. Also....how many service station attendants do you think make more than minimum wage. You say "The cost of fuel and electricity will rise even if there is no increase in the minimum wage." So what do you think will happen when their cost of doing business goes up?

Greeneway

Can someone tell me whether the North Augusta Greeneway is a one-way path or a two-way path? It would make a difference in responding to rant # 1. If it's a one-way path, it makes sense for the slower-moving persons to stay to the right. However, if it's a two-way path, then pedestrians (including joggers) have tradition on their side if they walk/jog on the left so they face oncoming bikers.

Am I right?

Edit

Oooops. I see that Angela has already addressed this in her 8:27 post. That's what I get for posting first and reading later. Good morning to you, Angela.

HA and RM. It is very

HA and RM. It is very frustrating isn't it, that so many people don't understand the most basic economics.

I understand the posters concerns for sure, but the way to get a raise is to either be a top employee, or get skills for a better job.

What I would like to see is the unionization of every employee in the U.S.A. below the executive level. I mean, if unions are so good, then that would work, right? If a union auto worker is worth $75K, then a teacher must be at least $100K. If a plumber is making $40/hr, then surely LEO's should make $50/hr.

Of course, the average house would cost you $600K, a dozen eggs would be $5, milk $7/gal and so on......

Okay, that settles it. Pedestrians on the left, bikes on the right. I hope Ranter #1 reads the online comments.

The Minimum Wage...

....is an insidious idea that's pushed by liberals for a number of reasons, all of which are emotion driven and none of which help either the people they claim to be helping, or the Economy as a whole.

Quite the contrary, in fact. When you raise the minimum wage, you are really raising the cost of labor throughout the economy. If an untrained, unskilled worker in a business makes $9/hr, then all trained/skilled employees at the same business will make more than the unskilled/untrained worker. The hourly wages of all employees will be raised so that the wage structure appropriately rewards the higher levels of skills, training, and longevity.

Secondly, many workers are priced out of the market. Employers simply won't hire entry level workers if their profit margins won't allow the increased cost of labor. If they currently employ people making, say $8.25/hr they have two choices; give them a raise, or lay them off.

The facts are that raising the minimum wage increases the price of goods and services, reduces the number of jobs available to entry level workers, and causes layoffs of people whose skills and abilities are not viewed as "worth it" to employers whose profit margins can't stand the strain of increased costs of labor within their pricing structure. All of these things are exactly the OPPOSITE of what should be done if creating jobs and stabilizing the Economy are the REAL goals of the Obama Administration. They aren't.

The very existence of a mandatory "minimum wage" is a bad idea, raising it is a horrible idea.

If $9/hr is good, $50/hr must be MUCH BETTER. Why not make it $50/hr?

Min Wage

Just another distraction by the President to pretend to care for the poor. Focus on a small wage increase for a few people and ignore the 27 million that cannot find any job, must less a minimum wage job. Forget the 24 million who are now receiving gov't assistance which is less than a min wage job. But, he gets the normal pass from the Media who simply never mention these things.

Anyone dumb enough to go to Underground Atlanta anymore, deserves to either pay more or deal with the consequences. Downtown ATL at night is just no place to be. Unless you have a death wish of course.

Brendan Douglas

Jake, the truth is that Brendan will NOT get a better opportunity at UGA. He will never be a running back there, and the chances even of playing linebacker are minimum with all the linebackers they already have. The fact that UGA wasn't even interested in him until an extra spot opened up at the last minute should have told him something. He would have been a star running back at Tech and gotten an education that would have left him set in life, instead of probably being a teacher or a banker. A degree from Tech is worth far more than any degree from UGA other than pre-med or pre-law, and there's no guarantee in pre-law. But the main thing here is that he COMMITTED to Tech and then reneged at the last minute. That shows he has no class whatsoever. He WILL regret it.
