South Ga. man shoots self in hospital lot

WAYCROSS, GA. — A contract employee with Mayo Clinic’s Waycross hospital was treated for a gunshot wound Tuesday after accidentally shooting himself in the hospital’s parking lot.

Matt Lee Blue, 37, who is listed as both the victim and the offender on a Waycross police report, went to his truck in the parking lot at 5 p.m. to retrieve an item for a friend.

When reaching for the item, however, Blue’s .22-caliber revolver fell from the truck and discharged when it hit the pavement, sending one round into his leg, the report said.

The bullet went straight through, the police report said.

Audrey Laine Ellis, a spokeswoman for Mayo Clinic Waycross, said Blue’s injury was not life-threatening and an internal investigation has been started on the incident.
