PAYING PEOPLE TO donate blood is asking for trouble with a safe blood supply. There are already too many people who try to donate despite obvious unsafe health conditions.

A RAVE FULL OF gratitude for the person who turned my husband’s wedding ring in to the Lost and Found at Eisenhower Army Medical Center. This symbol of 31 years of marriage was irreplaceable. Thank you for being caring and honest when you could have so easily seen it as a windfall to be sold at a gold-buying place. Thank you, thank you.

THE ONLY TIME liberals don’t use children as political props is when it’s a Pro-Choice Rally.

YES, THE CITY WOULD be a lot more visually and physically appealing if it would assign non-violent probationers to do clean up and yard work of sorts. And now’s the time of year to start since the Masters is coming.

THE RICHMOND COUNTY BOE discriminates against white people. The only people I see promoted are black.

NOTE TO PEOPLE who think that they are not being watched: There are cameras everywhere.

RAVES TO WALTER Williams’ column: Are guns the problem? Or is it the breakdown of civilized society? He summarized the slippery slope that started years ago. Pseudo-intellectuals continue to close their eyes to the real problems – themselves.

NO CHARGES FOR driving the wrong way for three miles on River Watch Parkway? Great start for our new sheriff.

IT’S GOOD TO SEE the viewer-support dollars we send to GPB being put to such good use as paying the six-figure salaries of the former politicians who now run the company.

JUST BECAUSE OBAMA is the darling of the media does not mean he should give them a pass when it comes to the mass shootings. There is no doubt that media violence, including video games, play a part in affecting how people think and act. There is more to the problem than just guns!

WHY IS AMERICA SO enamored with adopting children from foreign countries and giving billions in unappreciated aid to these countries? Wake up America and help your own before it’s too late.

For The Gun Issue

This is my last comment on it.

A very large consolation of documented fact about the gun issue.

"Background check? Hah!"

Background checks are an interesting issue...

Most people seem to believe that when someone goes into a gun store, before they can buy a gun there is some kind of detailed, comprehensive check run on whether they are citizens, have any criminal record, have some sort of psychological impairment, and the like. I hate to be the bearer of bad news here, but these famous "background checks" you keep hearing about are a FARCE.

You fill out a form, the gun store owner has no way of knowing what you say on the form is true, or false, you sign the form, pay him for the gun and walk out the door with your brand new "assault" rifle.

No check has been run. Zero. Nada. If/when they close the non-existent "gun show loophole" things won't be any different, just one more piece of paper created, that's all.

What happens to all these millions of "background check" forms that are created in gun stores across the Nation? I can't say for sure. I have this vision of a big warehouse somewhere in/around Washington, DC where sit boxes, and boxes, and boxes of "background check" forms just collecting dust. I have serious doubts that there are rooms full of document entry clerks entering all the data from the forms into a correct and usable database.

I'd like to see some Senator or Congressman walk over to BATF and ask to see the background check forms from the last year's sales and then ask to see the database where he can check all the data entry.

Harley, you are partially

Harley, you are partially correct. When they are asked for a trace on a weapon, they have to manually sift through microfilm to locate the person who bought it. (I am supposing the background check contains the gun SN and this is what they use)

Two Republican Senators (who died last year) had it codified some years back that there would be no federal central database of gun owners. Of course, their fear is the same as ours; they know whose door to knock on should there be martial law.

edit: I had seen it on a TV news blurb. I googled it and came up with this article from the Huffington Post which details it better than the news blurb.

Walking right or left

In old times the damsel walked on the left because the knights drew their swords right handed and need space to swing.

The introduction of Automobiles changed it again. With the women walking furthest away from the traffic to avoid splashes and etc.

Now we are currently in the IPOD/IPHONE/SMART PHONE generation.
The ladies and gents (aka M/F) both have their noses stuck so deep into the gadgets, they don't even know who, or what is standing next to them.

I often wonder if a person just started walking a few steps against a red light, in heavy traffic.Could he trigger a group of these people into committing mass accidental suicide?

harley_52 01/31/13 - 10:31 am
"Harley, you are partially correct....

....When they are asked for a trace on a weapon, they have to manually sift through microfilm to locate the person who bought it."

That's a point I tried to make, but not the main point.

The main point is this....people think a "background check" is....well...a background check. It isn't. Nobody checks the background of the guy/gal purchasing the weapon before he/she walks out the door with it.

I'd like to see somebody stand up in front of Congress and with all the cameras rolling and admit there is no such thing as a "background check" when someone purchases a weapon.

Edit...(thanks for your edit, IAD) So the warehouse building about which I speculated really does exist and there really isn't any database of weapons and owners produced from all those thousands of forms filled out by buyers..... It really is a FARCE, isn't it?

OC- on cell phones

The funniest thing I've ever seen was a clip of a guy with his nose buried in his smartphone. He was walking down a sidewalk in an apartment complex and got within a few feet of a big bear that had wandered in. The guy changed directions so fast it looked as if someone snatched him with a rope.

I'm pretty sure it required a change of undergarments......

That HP article bears out what you say.

Judicial System

NO CHARGES FOR driving the wrong way for three miles on River Watch Parkway? Great start for our new sheriff.

First, the New Sheriff had nothing to do with this as someone else posted.

Second, I know we have a very screwed up Judicial system, but it is not to the point of making it a No Charge on this lady. There is beyond a reasonable doubt that unknown and unpublished justifiable facts have had a lot to do with this decision.

Sure wish I knew what they were and I wonder if she still has a drivers license?

Cell phones

See the one of the women walking through the mall texting and falls into the fountain? Priceless.

hmmmm....the most recent

hmmmm....the most recent immigration reform proposal would require all illegal immigrants to register and have a background check to receive "amnesty." If they are found to have broken any laws they will be denied.

hmmmm......since they broke the law to get here, and were breaking the law every day that they stayed here, wouldn't that mean they would ALL be denied?

Jane18 01/31/13 - 12:25 pm
Agree With Angela

Hmmmmm Angela, that makes two of us that think they should be denied for those reasons!

Background Checks

I've been wondering about those "universal background checks" the mainstream media keeps telling us are necessary to stop "gun violence." They want to make private sales (sales of guns from an individual to another individual) subject to universal background checks. What I have a hard time getting my head around is that the liberals would now have opened the door to serious invasions of privacy. If I, a private citizen and not a registered gun dealer, wish to sell a shotgun to my neighbor, do I now have access to his entire background (who his employers have been, how many parking tickets he has had, how many bankruptcies he has been through, what his medical history is, etc.)? I thought the liberals were privacy rights advocates.

allhans 01/31/13 - 01:10 pm

LL. I think the two of you, buyer and seller, would have to march yourselves down to a gun shop and have the shop do the paperwork/background check. Big brother neeeds to know...( -:

"Background checks" for gun purchases are a myth.

Past vs. Future

What I'm fearing, Harley, is that if Obama gets what Biden wants, future "background checks" will be more invasive of privacy than the current paperwork system you described above.

As of now, we don't know. The mainstream media just parrots Biden's "universal background check" mantra without explaining what it is. I doubt if Biden knows, either.

harley_52 01/31/13 - 02:56 pm
"What I'm fearing, Harley....

....is that if Obama gets what Biden wants, future "background checks" will be more invasive of privacy than the current paperwork system you described above....

I think you have good reason to hold that fear and I certainly share it. I think one of the reasons the NRA (and others) haven't addressed this sham of a system we now refer to as "background checks" is the fear that if the democrats really recognize how worthless the present "system" is, they'll replace it with something that is far, far more invasive.

It is about time!

I would not arrest the low level employee either, as I don't want to pay for their upkeep. Keep hammering the employers and the illegal will have no job and go back home.

For all of you that are so

For all of you that are so concerned about privacy issues, if you have a social security number, you have no privacy, and the government can already access everything they need to know about you.

So all the ones who are so concerned about their privacy- that ship done sailed a long time ago.

Harley this is so dang funny...lol

In about two years I've been posting on here, I think I've flagged only one (and that one wasn't removed). On the other hand, I must get more flags than an Indy 500 driver.

Speaking of courtesy

... I have held doors for ladies since my early teens as a practical matter. As my mentor explained it to me, "When else can you watch ladies' bottoms as they pass by and often receive a 'thank you' as well?"

You have always been a true gentleman...:)

and RM i wondered about this too....
Funny how we sometimes don't find a certain article or letter interesting while others find it exciting and are motivated to discuss it.

Some articles just don't do a thing for me & others make my blood boil....different strokes as they say...

Dapper! In the very best sense of the word.

Privacy still exists, but for how long, who knows. All that info is not cross referenced, thank goodness.

If it was, they could nail cheaters of the government funds right quick, assuming the actually want to nail them.
