A 65-year-old Waynesboro man died early Saturday after a fire destroyed a nursing home.
Charles Atkins was killed when a fire broke out about 4:30 a.m. at Twin Oaks Assisted Living Home at 747 Old Millen Highway in Waynesboro, according to a news release by the Georgia Department of Insurance
Six residents escaped without injury. The cause of the fire is undetermined, but investigators suspect it was caused by the improper disposal of a cigarette.

The staff reports are inaccurate. A nursing home and an assisted living facility are two different entities. In a nursing home this incident would be considered a failure to prevent accidents/lack of supervision and the nursing home could be held accountable.
There is a big difference in nursing homes and assisted living homes from what I have seen working EMS. The AC ES needs to do more editing or research before posting such headlines as it makes them look ill-informed.
An assisted living home could be 2 rooms set aside in a house to care for people in need of care, to an operation the size of an apartment complex with separate apartments for each person. I have been on calls in private homes that have been transformed into assisted living facilities. I know of 2 such homes in Clearwater, one in New Ellenton, one near the county line on Martintown Rd.
And most of us already know what a nursing home is all about.
