Officials study car found beneath Sand Bar Ferry bridge

Divers and police were called to the Sand Bar Ferry bridge Monday after fishermen reported seeing a car beneath the water.

Members of the Augusta-Richmond County Fire Department investigate a submerged car in the Savannah River beneath the Sand Bar Ferry bridge. Fishermen spotted it and contacted authorities Monday afternoon.

Aiken County sheriff’s Capt. Troy Elwell said North Augusta and Richmond County authorities were alerted around 1:10 p.m. Later, the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office took over the investigation.

Elwell said it appeared the car, which was covered in algae, has been underwater for some time.

“We don’t know how long it’s been out there,” he said. “It could have been 10 years or more.”

Richmond County and South Carolina Department of Natural Resources divers were called in to try to get a tag number and see whether anyone might have been in the car when it went under.

Glad...

Glad I wasn't the one spotting a submerged car this time. Pain in the neck reporting all this stuff, but I'm hoping it's the car that had the print on the back window that was stolen from the man that was murdered in Hepzibah. It would be good to have that missing link to add to the case.
