  • Follow Metro

A Hephzibah woman died Saturday afternoon after losing control of her motorcycle and crashing into a concrete wall.

According to a Richmond County sheriff’s report, Sherry A. Tipton, 39, of the 2900 block of Lander Court, was driving her 2007 Suzuki GSXR 1300 west on John C. Calhoun Expressway when she failed to negotiate a curve and crashed into the concrete divide.

Tipton was thrown 198 feet and the motorcycle was thrown 366 feet. Officers determined she had been driving too fast for conditions. She was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:20 p.m.

Our prayers to the family

and her loved ones.

This was an extremely powerful motorcycle, with a top speed of between 180 to 202mph. Given she was thrown about 198 feet and using data based on a series of Crash Investigation Team studies, for motorcycle accidents and the distance riders thrown. This data would put this rider doing around 94mph. Which is an rough extrapolation, using 45mph divide by 91feet and then X using 198 ft.

Speed may not have been the only reason.
While having been a rider myself, in the 1970's, and a founding GAMRO member. I quickly learned, all it takes is a good cross wind, gravel, uneven surface, or a POT HOLE at 45mph to shift your balance and drastically alter the steering.

@ OpenCurtain...I was thinking the same thing when I read the article. It says"Tipton was thrown 198 feet and the motorcycle was thrown 366 feet"...I was wondering how fast she had to be going.

So sad.

Prayer to the families

Prayer to the families involved. Wasn't there other riders involved that may have fled? I read that on FB last night....but no details were released.
