Used grease and oil will be collected at the Columbia County Water Utility, 5325 Evans to Locks Road, Evans, and at the Augusta Utilities Department, 1820 Doug Barnard Parkway. The event will be Friday, Feb. 1, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday, Feb. 2, from 8 a.m. to noon.
Used cooking oils are a serious problem for home plumbing and for wastewater collection and treatment systems. Oil poured down drains will eventually gel and solidify, causing backups, reduced water flow and other costly problems.
Oils that can be recycled during the event include grease left over from cooking (such as bacon grease, canola oil, corn oil, lard, olive oil, peanut oil, sesame oil, sunflower oil and vegetable oil.
Oils to be recycled should be free of water, soap and food scraps, and be in a non-breakable, leak-proof container with a tight lid.
